Price of Genesre

Post by Tracey » Sun May 13, 2007 12:36 pm

My membership to this ran out in March and i didnt bother to renew it.
I got email notification just now of someone, who luckily i know, contacting me but cant view as i am no longer a member, which is finebut i just looked at the price of renewal
Full membership costs £9.95 GBP for 6 months and lets you access the following site services................................ that is ridiculous, it was that for year before and now you buy on a 6 monthly basis [rant] .

:-k Wonder if the founder has Dick Turpin in his tree
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Thats starting to be a rip-off. My membershipran out in March and I didnt bother to re-new it. Its probably due to all the people starting to get interested in genealogy that the prices have risen. Most of the site seems to be English based, with records and censuses. I doubt I will be re-newing as I have already got a fair few contacts from the site and near the end of the membership i was getting matches for people that were born in America or England when the people in my tree were no where near those areas.

I too let my membership there lapse a few months back, and am unlikely to renew it in future. The price hike makes my renewal even more unlikely.

All the best,

Genesre just sent me an email as they noted i had recieved a message today on the site and i clicked to view it. I told them that as there are so many good D-G sites around now  it makes it easier to find connections and if it is going to cost me £20 a year i would rather put that money towards another area of my research.

I have been trying to amend my tree for days on the site but it keeps coming up with an error. I am getting fed up so I will definitely not be renewing my membership when it expires in July. I couldn't even send them an email to tell them how fed up I was!

I imagine the price hike has a lot to do with the fall in advertising revenue at ITV, which now owns GR. They are probably trying to extort more from us considering the huge fee they paid for the site, thinking we are just going to say yes. I think they might be in for a hell of a shock! :)

I've just had my renewal invitation which was £9.95 for 1 year - exactly the same as I paid last year. Apparently you only get 6 months if you renew more than 4 weeks after the previous membership elapses, presumably to deter people from holding their membership in abeyance until they want to make a new contact.

But like others I probably won't renew as I suspect I've had all the useful contacts I'm likely to get, which I have to say have been good. But I won't miss the endless pages of ridiculous hot matches because I have the misfortune to have Smiths in my tree.

Hi Maisie

Are you in for a shock :D

My membership expired in September last year and I didn't bother renewing it. Like you I thought that all likely contacts had been made.
Since then I have had several good links so my tree must still be up on Genes to be viewed. I can't view their trees though.
If they make contact with me I can reply but can't initiate a contact. I just add my direct e-mail address and link privately. This is much better anyway 'cause you can exchange certificates and GedCom files with the contact.
We still get Hot Matches, usually 5 pages at a time which I still take time to filter through and pick up possible contacts.
Looks like I have the advantages with few disadvantages.
I won't be renewing though so I may be excommunicated soon.

I have posted this reply twice now and it hasnt shown up :? hopefully third time lucky............

It seems that unless you renew when they contact you and dont let it lapse thats when its still £9.95 a year but if you decide to do it in your own time .........read on.....................

Thanks for your email.

If you renew your membership either 2 weeks before the renewal date or up to 4 weeks after it, the cost of membership is £9.95 for one year. If you opted for our auto-renewal the fee would be automatically taken from your card. We will email you 28 days before the renewal takes place so that you are free to opt out of it if you wish.

If, for some reason, the auto-renewal fails then you will have to manually renew your upgrade.

If you renew your upgrade over 4 weeks after the date it expired, then the cost of renewal is £9.95 for 6 months.

Without paying the renewal upgrade fee, you can still receive unlimited emails and newsletters as well as add photos to the site, allow members access to your tree and view theirs if they give you access, and view and post on our message boards when you log into Genes Reunited, so your name will remain listed on the site unless you choose to remove it.

Best regards,

****
