Victorian BDM indexes inportant message.

Post by Hugh Stevely » Wed May 23, 2007 9:07 am

I have just read that the Victorian BDM indexes will be withdrawn from public access from the latter part of this year and that there will be a 100 year embargo on births.
The CD's will also be withdrawn from sale
Can't understand why as they are already in the public arena but if you need any victorian bdm certificates you had better get them now.
For more info contact the victorian registry of births deaths & marriages as I do not know any more.

Hugh.

Hi Hugh,

Which county's BDM data is this referring to?

All the best,

Andrew

Obvious confusion here between "Victorian" as in records of the UK Victorian era, and the records of the State of that name in country by the name of The Commonwealth of Australia :!:

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia

and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_(Australia)

But it's a sair fecht that these records are going to be withdrawn.

While there's a 100 year embargo on the Scottish birth records on-line at www.scotlandspeople.gove.uk , anyone can access Scottish birth records up to the present day, on a visit to New Register House, and an increasing number of locations around Scotland which can link in to the DIGROS system in Edinburgh .................

It's a shame to hear about a resource being pulled. I suppose this might effect some other Australian genealogical resources online too.

The current rules provide birth information to 1924 online & to 1920 on CDs
It is going to become an Australian standard that no birth information will be available (other than for legal/statutory reasons - or to the individual or next of kin) for births less than 100 years ago. This is already the case in some Australian States.

The Vic change is not dramatic - it was previously not possible to access birth information post 1924 - it means if you would like a birth certificate for someone born in Victoria (Australia) between 1906 and 1924 - download it now

Trish

I find it wonderful in England/Scotland to be able to access this information. Sadly most of my ancestors had moved to Australia by 1905 - although I can often trace their siblings through your records

Hiya,

Are there any online ways to trace births after 1906 for Scottish records? Or do you have to physically visit the New Register House?

I have a couple of Gemmells born 1908-1923 that I could do with getting the birth info on to confirm dates of birth and parentage!

Hi Paula

The short answer is "nope". Gotta have eyes in NRH or Park Circus as far as I know. If you know the date of the brith you can order a cert from NRH but have to pay for an extract price. If you're just fishing from online you are outta luck. (She says knowingly from across the pond)

Now for the sales pitch  .....Talkingscot is promoting a Tombola drawing at the moment. I believe a couple of the prizes being awarded include some in person lookups. If you were lucky enough to win....you get your info rather inexpensively! :D

Best wishes
Jean

You said "While there's a 100 year embargo on the Scottish birth records on-line at www.scotlandspeople.gove.uk , anyone can access Scottish birth records up to the present day, on a visit to New Register House, and an increasing number of locations around Scotland which can link in to the DIGROS system in Edinburgh ................."

Can you tell us where else other than NRH or Park Circus is/are involved in "an increasing number of locations around Scotland"?

Thank you.
