Hot match on GenesReunited

Post by paddyscar » Sat Jun 23, 2007 5:12 am

I joined GenesReunited last August for just about £6. I have had "matches" that really stretch the term. Among others, I'm looking for John Kelly and James Kelly (and aren't there millions of them), but even the ones born in every hamlet from the Orkneys to Tasmania, seem to be on the list of 'hot matches', eventhough I've stipulated Glasgow, Scotland as the birthplace.

I've just been notified of this weeks matches, and guess who made the list? Me! I don't know whether to spit with frustration; laugh with the absurdity, or cry because I'm only a 'hot' match on 3 of the 4 matches with myself! :x

Hi Frances,

 Sorry...couldn't help but laugh  I hope you were at least No. 1 on the Hot match list

I haven't looked at GR for the longest time...too frustrating for me :)

Regards,
Anne H

Hello
Don't be too quick to give up I know that "Hot Matches" can be a real pain but I have made about 5 or 6 good contacts through them.

Good Luck

I tend to stay away from the hot matches too. If you have a common surname in your tree then inevitably that's where most of the matches are to be found. I can't be bothered sifting through them to be honest. It's usually better to just manually search.

I have given up with the hot matches as well, I seem to get matches that are on my tree sorry that sounds silly, what I mean is when I go to contact them it is myself I am contacting.

Hi Anne: I was about 8th on the list of matches!

Smid & Rab - they can be very frustrating, but I've just noticed you can have the locations come up as well, instead of opening all of them, so that makes it a bit quicker. I've made 2 connections, but again, not on the common names.

Audrey; That's what happened here too. They were matching me with me, not once but four matches in a row.

It's very frustrating, but it all adds to the great 'millions matched' advertising they do. It never identifies them as 'good' matches.

Frances

I can sympathise with you regarding those hot matches, especially those that are not even remotely associated with our lang deid yins in our trees.
My best match so far is a 17 name match, but I am already in contact with them, we have the same paternal gggrandfather. I have also had a couple of really good matches, but like you squillions of the others.

I must have a look later to see how to narrow down the matches, but unlike you I haven't had any matches with myself yet  But time will tell, wont it.

I am very happy with Genes at the moment. It didn't hot match me with this contact but he contacted me.We share the same GGGgreat-Grandparents.He has did some extensive research on this line & was able to place it back to the 1600's with confidence-bless the minister/clerks of Perth Assoc Congregation & that they named their children according to tradition.Throw in a will & a bit of good luck & we have the Taylors ticking along nicely.

I should clarify my position on Genes Hot Matches :D

I am not against the hot matches, in fact I have some good ones, it is just that the heaps of others that are not remotely connected that are the problem. It just takes too long to get rid of them, and if you dont they are still there next time there is a hot match session.

I agree with Stewie, I have found a fair few connection through GR, but I cant keep up with the useless hot matches, how can anyone say Wiliam Anderson from Strathaven is a match to a William Anderson born in the same year in Ireland.

Audrey

Very frustrating
