Statistical Accounts

Post by Pandabean » Sat Jun 23, 2007 10:37 am

I was reading through some of the help on the webiste for statistical accounts and it mentions you can download a pdf of a parish. I cannot find this option either in the free account or being logged in. Can anyone help?

Also I have noticed that these books can be bought somewhere but I do not know if it is worth having a copy of the book (around £50) or a free PDF (if I can find it) and printing them out. Has anyone ever bought a Statistical Account from the 1800s?

Hi Andy
I'd noticed the pdf option just last week and also could not find it! (logged in or not...)
On the site, the quick reference guide at:
http://edina.ac.uk/statacc/docs/Quick_R ... otland.pdf
says:
Downloading an entire parish
The PDF download button will save a copy of
the entire parish you are looking at to a PDF file
on your computer. You must first read and accept
the copyright statement that is displayed.
I must be having a dizzy day - can't see any pdf button at all, even when logged in....

I usually use the "printer friendly" link and print out parishes I'm interested in. I've seen boooks for sale in 2nd hand bookshops but they tend to be quite expensive and to own the full set of volumes would be pretty dear, I reckon!

Best wishes
Lesley

I too looked at that and I still cannot see the button. I have looked through most of the site looking for it. I usually save the images and then print them to a PDF file, but it is so much hassle.

You can access various text formats of the New Statistical Accounts by going first to www.archive.org/details/newstatisticalac06edinuoft which takes you direct to the page for the 6th volume.

Then fiddle about with the search options to find any other volumes on the site.

This is the same site that has the complete Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticannae. Try http://www.archive.org/search.php?query ... i%C3%A6%29

As far as I'm aware, unless you take out a subscription on the Edina website, you can only browse, not download files.

I have a access under a UK Higher and Further Education subscription, so you would think that should allow you access to all options, but it does not seem so... at least there is no sign of the pdf option.

I've emailed them... so I hope enlightenment will not be far away.

Best wishes

For an individual the subscription for full and unfettered access to the Edina info, including, I assume, PDF downloads, is £40 + VAT, for individuals in the UK, £60 elsewhere, - I'm unclear if this is on a per annum basis, - see http://edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/access ... individual

I too have access through my uni, well not for very long now. It is soon to be cut off when I graduate next week. :(

I might buy one of the books as I do like old and rare books, however the spine is not original. Does it cost much ro rebind old books?
