MORNING FAMILY IN AFRICA .....

Post by marilyn morning » Sun Feb 13, 2005 7:10 am

I recently received a Morning Family Photo, taken in Africa around 1950. It 's believed they lived there, much to my surprise! Any ideas why a gent from Scotland would wind up in Africa during this time? Just wondering!

Regards

I would imagine that among the dozen or more British colonial nations still existing in 1950 Africa, there could be plenty of opportunity for a man from the UK.

That began to change dramatically in the following decade or so, but that continent held lots of promise 50-60 years ago.

Two uncles of mine did RAF training in South Africa during World War II. After the war, one of them emigrated to Rhodesia, where he raised his family. They were there until political changes in the 1980s made them move on to South Africa.

Opportunities for tradesmen were available in South Africa in the 1960s, to work in the gold and diamond mines.

So there were incentives to move to Africa from the UK, presumably to the countries of the Commonwealth.

All the best,

As a missionary?
www.mundus.ac.uk has a vast amount of information from various collections of overseas missionary materials held in the United Kingdom .

Scots in Africa

Post by Swiscot » Sun Feb 13, 2005 6:53 pm

Lots of us went to Africa for the adventure and the work in sunny climes.
The Scots were THE explorers of Africa and left their mark everywhere. In my case living in Thomsons Falls, Kenya named after Joseph Thomson of Dumfries, my home town, who was the first white man to have seen the falls.
Great Continent, some great people and of course Caledonian Societies in every country.

P.S. David, no idea where in Africa this picture was taken. Only note on the back was "Four Mornings in Africa"
