Major Brickwall - 2x Grt Granda Niven - any advice please?

Post by Frink » Tue Oct 17, 2006 1:34 am

Hi all

My great grandfather William Niven born between 1823-28 to parents William Niven and Isabella McIntyre is still eluding me. :(

The information comes from William's MC and his DC. William's daughter was the informant on his DC. On the 51-61 Census' both state he was born in Lanark.

I have searched for (Niven/Nivin/McNiven/MacNiven/Nevin): -

BC William Niven (1820-35)
BC William McIntyre (1820-35)
BC's of other siblings with parents William Niven & Isabella McIntyre
MC William Niven & Isabella McIntyre
DC Isabella Niven (nee McIntyre)
DC Isabella McIntyre
DC William Niven (Snr)
Every 1841 Census looking for any Niven that's a Coachman.
Also tried the Wills on Scotland's People.

William Snr was a Coachman's Contractor so have checked the 1827 Business directory. William Jnr was also a Coachman, married in 1849 Dunoon so have also checked out the Niven's in that area . I know there was a Coachmans' hostlery/inn in Dunoon but do not know any more about it.

I realise that the wrong names could be on the DC but the naming of his children would suggest otherwise. :? I have also checked out William Niven/Isabella Thomson plus William Niven/Isabella Fotheringham.

Have I exhausted all avenues or is there something else I could explore?
If he did have different parents ... how would I prove a link?

kind regards
Frink

On IGI, entering marriage for William Niven 1823 +/-5 gets several hits without entering a wife's name.

Grasping at straws ... what if William married a woman who died in childbirth or shortly after. He remarried to an Isabella McIntyre and William Junior never knew she wasn't actually his birth mother, which is not unusual.

If that were the case, you'd need to find:

MC for William and?
BC for William Junior to William and ?
DC for William's wife
MC for William and Isabella dated after William Junior's BC

Here's hoping for a simpler answer though,

Greetin's Frink,
Because of The Clan connection, I have hundreds of Niven/McNiven records on file.
Had a look through what I have.
Could see no William with a McIntyre connection.
Have quite a bit on the Nivens in the East End of Glasgow.
Noticed you are researching McAdam and Duffy.
I am not sure if it was a Robert Duffy, who married Ellen Niven.
However, I know her sister Elizabeth did marry Joseph Scott.
And their Daughter Isabella Niven Scott married William Brown in 1914.
Elizabeth and Ellen's mother, Margaret McAdam, died in the Calton in 1910.

Have other Niven records from the area,
Davie

Hi Frances & Davie

Thank you Frances I will certainly take this on board. I'm going to the records office next week so try to systematically work through this. :D

Davie YES!!! YES!!! and YES!!! Have sent you a PM

This is pretty much where I've got to with my Niven Branch as I cannot seem get by William but I've got some pretty extensive research on the McAdam Branch. I did find a George Niven (Coachman) that could have been a brother of William - ironically his mother-in -law was called Isabella McIntyre

Thank you both
Frink

Hi, I know this thread is from almost 10 years ago so this is a bit of a long shot. I was wondering if you ever found any more information? I'm a descendant (GGG Granddaughter J Niven), but anything I've found online has ended at William.

Hi Jekka10,

This thread is not 10 years old; it is approaching 20 years old. User Frink has not been active on the forum since 2008, but if they have the same e-mail address as they had back then, they should be notified that there is a new response on their thread.

All the best,
