hi, i know this is a long shot since your post was 5 years ago! but... i was also born at Queen Mary's (in 1949) and would really appreciate a picture of it if you still are able.
FYI, all the info i could find on it says it only became a maternity home in 1958. i think we are both proof that it catered for this prior to that.
yours, Alin Boon.

Hi,

I'm very late to the party here, but trying to find out information about the Queen Mary Nursing and then Maternity Home (that was demolished in 2006 making way for the Quartermile Development). I was born in the Maternity Home in late 1969, before it's closure in 1973.

I'm struggling to find any historical photos of the building, which is somewhat surprising given Tony Blair was born there in 1953. Volker previously posted in 2012 followed by Alin in 2017 regarding some photos taken in 1969. I would be very interested in seeing those, if either of you read this, or from anyone else.

I'm thinking the building was on the Eastern Side of Chalmers Street, towards the Southern end somewhere between Simpson Loan and North Meadow Walk. There are quite a few aerial photos taken at the time of the demolition, showing a car park on the opposite (Western) side of Chalmers Street, but nothing I could find showing the Home. There are some very old 1940's architects plans I've found on Trove that talk about nos. 29, 31, 33, 35 and 37 Chalmers Street for the nursing home, so was it a conversion of these buildings into the nursing home?

I live in Hampshire but am up in Edinburgh with my Family in a couple of weeks intending to visit Quartermile, so if anyone can add to the above or has any photos that would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Colin

Hi Colin,

[TS_welcome]

See the maps at the following link - a side-by-side comparison of a 1940s map against a current map.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by ... &right=osm

This map shows the Queen Mary Nursing Home as 27 to 35 Chalmers Street.

All the best,

AndrewP
