A Small Country with Two Languages
Aye Boab
But which Norwegian
Following nearly a century under the thumb of Stockholm, and 4 centuries prior to that under the thumb of Copenhagen, Norway finally gained full independence on 17th May 1905, - "Syttende Mai" - and if you ever want to see how an independence day should be celebrated make sure that you are in Norge that day , but give yourself at least a full day for recovery from the resultant hangover
As part of the independence movement in the mid-1800s a "new" language was created by putting together spoken Norwegian and Old Norsk, to create NyNorsk or Landsmål.
Written "Norwegian" up to that point was more a form of Danish, - then and now known as Boksmål.....
Certainly up to 30 years ago a kid going on to secondary school had, in effect, to learn a new language, - closely related, yes, but different.
On the basis of my Swedish I can just about manage in Boksmål but Landsmål most often defeats me.

PS Next time you're down in Manchester ask to be introduced to the finer points of the 3 and 4 consonant combinations in Polish

Bob.
Ah wiz telt ba ma teechurs at Ayr Academy that Ah hid nae linguistic abilities........ 'n' believing that opinion proceeded to believe that my linguistic abilities were minimal, until I moved to Sweden in 1980, living and working there until 1986, and becoming fully fluent in Swedish, to the extent, that, were I to meet a Swede tomorrow, the fluency is such that, after a few minutes, the "programme" kicks in and the brain produces the necessary words, - the active vocabulary might occasionally be a wee bit of a problem, but the passive vocabulary is still on top form !!!
