Post by nancy » Tue Jun 14, 2005 11:01 pm

Hi All, can anyone out there help me?After many hours and credits searching sp,i eventually found my gt gran/gramps marriage,in St Johns Chapel Govan 1861/2.I believed they came to Paisley from Ireland, then my granny was born.I now find they were married in Gorbals and gran born 2 yr later in Paisley. My gran was Agnes Devine, Father was William, Mother,Agnes McTague. There were various spellings of their names but i got there evenyually. On marriage cert,William's add is 126Main st,and Agnes,118Main st Gorbals.Add of St John's is hard to make out ,but it looks likePortugal St.Could this be right?.I still can't see me tracing them back to Ireland.Very thankful for any info.Cheers Nancy

Nancy

Might I suggest you use our Gallery to post the certificate. That way, we can see the details and almost certainly confirm what is on the certificate.

If you have any technical problems with this, please contact us.

St John's RC Chapel was in Portugal Street, Gorbals. A few pictiures can be seen online at the Virtual Mitchell collection.

http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/cgi-bin/ ... ortugal+St

It can be seen on a map at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/to ... entre.html then select sheet VI.14.5 near the top left corner. On that map, go to the east side about half way up and zoom in. You will find St John's RC Chapel.

All the best,

Portugal Street was indeed a street in the Gorbals in 1890's. It would have ran parallel to present day Gorbals Street, north from Bedford Street.

There was a RC Church marked on my 1894 map of the area in Portugal street.

So it wouldn't have been in Govan [ that's further west] but in the Gorbals.

Main Street, Gorbals was renamed Gorbals Street at some point, so they could just have nipped over the back to get hitched.

I hope that helps you 'get a handle' on them.

My that was quick.A very big thanks to you all.Yes it was Gorbals.I got mixed up with hubbies gran Mary Deakin who came from Govan.I remember driving through Gorbals going to Garthlands bakers with hubby, while they were knocking down the tenements, and building new housing. That was late 60s and a sad site.Still,i suppose we must move on!Once again many thanks. These are lovely pics of church.Cheers Nancy.
