Dunoon help needed

Post by sbunter » Mon Jul 07, 2008 11:45 am

Please can anyone help find a gravestone for a very old lady before it's too late.
This lady lost her 8 week old daughter Linda Jantiana TIMMER on 21 Nov 1942 in Dunoon.
She would love to travel back to see the gravestone but her health makes this impossible.
Please is anyone able to locate her daughter's gravestone in Dunoon, and send details and/or a photo?
Many thanks,
Sharon

Welcome SBunter I am sure there will be somebody who can oblige -if not it's a great excuse for a day "Doon the Water" when I come up to Scotland in August.
Any hints of where the Cemetery is???

Hi Sharon

Have a look at these links. The photos look lovely.

http://foreverargyll.com/cemeteries.htm - site is under construction, but you might get help there. It's worth asking. Someone is obviously putting in a lot of work.

This site seems to have a list of churches/churchyards in Dunoon:- http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/pls/portal/new ... ink=959985

Here's another site which offers a description from the old gazeteer, and which lists parishes in the area:- http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/t ... y3813.html

Hi Sharon

If you can contact the Argyll and Bute Council www.argyll-bute.gov.uk and find out which cemetery she is buried in I will see if I can either snap it next time I'm home or more expeditiously get one of the family to do it. Bear in mind that when people say Dunoon they don't necessarily mean the town itself. I often claim to come from Dunoon but, though I was indeed born there, I lived in a village 2 miles outside Dunoon and it has a cemetery of its own as do many of the villages around there.

If the wee one is in fact buried in the main Dunoon Cemetery it would be useful to get directions to the lair as it is quite a big cemetery and a single grave would be difficult to find.

I do hope you manage to locate the stone for the lady.

Anne

PS Just had a quick look at the wee one's DC and given where she lived it is most likely that she was buried in the main Dunoon Cemetery but I'm sure the Council could confirm that or give the correct info.

Hi Sharon

I wondered if you had ever managed to contact Argyll and Bute Council to get details of where the baby was buried??

I read the posts about Dunoon cemeteries with interest as I was just in the process of trying to find out which cemetery some ancestors were buried in, around that area. I telephoned Argyll & Bute Council to enquire and they said they could look but it would cost £14-80! That seemed like quite a lot, (both Glasgow & Inverness councils looked up similar info free of charge for me) so I thought I would try and find out if there are any records of MIs for the area. I think it may Kilmun cemetery I am after. Last year when I was in the area I went to Sandbank cemetery, but it is too recent. I then spent hours wandering around the big cemetery in Dunoon, to no avail! I believe there may be a list of MIs for Kilmun - does anyone know if there is a copy in the Mitchell Library? I will be in the area next week and plan to visit the Mitchell, and also the cemetery if I can verify it is the right place! Perhaps Anne, as she knows the area, could tell me if Kilmun cemetery is close to the pier, where the bus drops you? I probably won't have the car, as I will be coming over on the ferry.
I'd be grateful for any advice and "local knowledge"

Fiona

Hello Fiona,

Is this the book?
http://www.gould.com.au/Scottish-MI-Kilmun-p/scg066.htm

Here’s a PDF file with a list of Mitchell MIs.
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/ ... sOct06.pdf

Someone will be along soon with some clues on the locality.

All the best,
Alan

That looks like just what I need to look at Alan - thanks for that, and the Mitchell list. I'll rush along there at the earliest opportunity!

I was in Family Hiistory section of the Mitchell last Saturday and saw that they had many MI books. I had not appreciated how many there were. Looking at that list, over 180 pages with 10 or more listed per page - more than 1800 of these books. That's what you call a collection of them.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Fiona

You can get to Kilmun Cemetery by bus from Dunoon. I was not sure which pier you meant but it is certainly close to Kilmun pier and unless bus drivers at home have changed they'd almost certainly drop you at the cemetery anyway.

I'm not sure about times etc but the buses that go through Kilmun usually go on to Strone and Ardentinny. Visit Scotland's website has pages about Kilmun Church giving maps, directions and some info but not sadly any MIs.

This I hope is the link to the page on the website
http://guide.visitscotland.com/vs/guide ... /home.html

The graveyard itself is really interesting and worth a visit though that would probably be scant consolation to you if you did not find your rellies. What sort of timescale are you looking at?

If you are there say hello to all of my rellies from me!!

Anne

BTW £14.80 does seem a bit steep but think of all the hassle it would save you. Where are you from in Wiltshire? I was just down there, nose to the grindstone in the Record Office in Chippenham. I had a great time.

I guess it would not be prohibitive to take a taxi from Dunoon to Kilmun. Sandbank which is about 2 miles before that costs about £5 to £7 in a taxi so you could probably get there or back for around a tenner. Cheaper on the bus though.
