Dundee Graves

Post by AnnieM » Sat May 15, 2010 8:19 am

Hi
I am trying to find the graves for two people who died in Dundee: Sarah Fyffe Harris died 30 Nov 1868 district of St Mary Dundee and her husband Alexander McCash Harris died 19 Feb 1879 district of St Clements Dundee. I know they are not in the Howff because I checked the online records but how do I find where they are?

Grateful for any advice.

Cheers
Annie

Hi Annie
And welcome to Talking Scot. :D

I think the best place to contact is probably the local family history centre as I know they have access to the burial records

Coo, do you think what they say they can do is true?

The registrar can also research and complete an entire family tree from the slightest of information, regardless of whereabouts in Scotland the family originated. In most instances the registrar will be able to trace each branch of a family back to the late 17th century.

That's a bold claim!

I'd agree with you there...I'd be more than delighted if they could get back "to the late 17th C" with my Easter Ross Tarbat lot - I've been stuck for years with a birth which must have occurred about 1773... :

83. TARBAT* : (no pre-1794 births by the look of it...)
83/1 B 1794-19 M 1809-19 D -
83/2 B 1820-54 M 1820-54 D -
RNE
* See Appendix 1 under reference CH2/350
CH2/350 TARBAT
1 Includes Baptisms 1823-51
Marriages 1832-59

Hi folks

Lesley, have you tried the Tarbat Discovery Centre Graveyard Project? They do have parish records but the Tarbat ones don't go back to the 1700's. But maybe the graves do?

Anyway, don't knock the good people of Dundee. Even as I write this someone at the Council burials is looking into it for me.

Cheers for comments.

Oh no, I wasn't knocking them! I know they do excellent work but I do wonder if that statement perhaps raises people's hopes as to their expectations of what can be found given the limitations placed upon researchers by the survival (or not, as the case may be) of records.
