Which Cemetery?
I am desperate to try and trace the graves of my great-grandparents. I have paid Glasgow City Council to do a search but they seem to be struggling to come up with anything. I have been to the Mitchell Library but they cannot help as I do NOT know which Glasgow cemetery they are buried in?
Can any one help me on this?

Re: Which Cemetery?
Have you looked in the newspaper archives in the Mitchell Library for a funeral notice? If that exists, it should give a cemetery name.

Hello Scotthiggy,
Don’t forget that the Glasgow Herald is available on Google News Archive. Coverage isn’t complete and is only from 1937 to 1963 and late 1980s. It may be worth checking if those years are relevant. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=G ... 4&b_mode=2

Re: Which Cemetery?
They lived and died in Anderston, Glasgow. They died in 1920 and 1937. I asked G.C.C if it was possible that they couldve been buried in one of the defunct Anderston graveyards ( Cheapside and Heddle) but they reckon buriels stopped there in the late 1800's.nelmit wrote:When and where did they die and what was their address?scotthiggy wrote:I am desperate to try and trace the graves of my great-grandparents. Re: Which Cemetery?
Sadly, I think your relative may have fallen victim to the same march of (cough, splutter) “progress" as my poor Flora. She died in the Anderston district of Glasgow in 1873 and, if she was buried there, chances are she’s not there any longer – or if she is, she’s likely to be under the M8..... All the bodies in the most likely church yards for her (she lived right behind where the Mitchell now stands) were – supposedly - moved to in the 1960s to make way for some snot nose kid’s ‘redevelopment’ plans – i.e. the new motorway.
This is what I got back when I enquired at Glasgow Bereavement services:
I'm not sure of all the grave yards involved but I understand they included those from the kirk yard in North Street (where the Mitchell Library is now), Heddle Place (site of the old United Presbyterian Relief church) and St Marks (if they happened to be Catholic).
Hope that helps.

This is what I got back when I enquired at Glasgow Bereavement services:
From what I recall when I was researching this, it seems an announcement was made (god knows where) that families should claim any headstones before the bodies were exhumed and moved. Seems only 2-3 were ever claimed, the rest of them - regardless of how ornately carved they were, or who they belonged to - were smashed to pieces and used in the landscaping...Anderston Burial Grounds were closed by Sheriffs Order to make way for the development of the M8 extension in Glasgow in the 1960’s. All the remains were exhumed and removed to the Linn cemetery and were re interred in Section 26 (and possibly 22), however the remains were not indexed but all the remains were removed. The archive records for the Anderston Burial Grounds are held in The Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow to whom further enquiry can be made.

You could strike gold with the suggestion Currie made - try the Glasgow Herald for a death notice. They died in 1920 and 1937

Re: Which Cemetery?
The person I spoke to at G.C.C assured me that it was "very unlikely" that either of them were buried around Anderston as they stopped buriels there around the late 1800s. I was told that they were likely to be buried in a "western" cemetery (Lambhill, St Kentigerns?) . I have studied the on-line Glasgow Herald obituaries but cannot see anything relating to my great-grandparents. It seems to be mostly affluent sounding people who are mentioned in the old Herald's...my great-grand parents most probably lived in slum-housing around Anderston all their lives.

Have you had a look at :
http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/
both St Kentigerns and Lambhill are surveyed on it,
and there's a "Location Index" t help you locate other likely places to look at.
Of course if they didn't have a headstone that site isn't any help.

Had a look at this site and again drew a blank. Im hopeful that there will be a headstone for my great-gran because when she died in 1937, all of her children were adults and probably had jobs and hopefully were living more comfortably than they were as children....just need to keep my fingers crossed and my faith with Glasgow City Council.
