Cannot find my Mother/Grandmother

Post by Annie_Forsyth » Sat Sep 24, 2011 3:43 pm

Unfortunately I have no-one in the family to ask anymore. I have visited this challenge over the years and now want to get resolution.

We were living in Malta at the time my mothor died (father in RAF), she was taken back to Scotland in Nov/Dec 1961 - I believe to Edinburgh as my grandmother is said to have been buried there (her birthplace). The only thing I remember being told is my mother was cremated and her ashes sprinkled over the grave of my grandmother.

I have contacted the RAF who confirmed her being brought back, but after arriving in the UK do not have any more information. So after asking my now deceased Uncle was told to leave sleeping dogs lie and he could not remember where either his mother or sister were in relation to graves :( Very odd if you ask me!! So, wrote to Aberdeen/Edinburgh Councils with no success.

My Grandmother lived until married in Edinburgh: at 10 address was Bruntenpols? Road, at 20 it was Bruston Place - so not sure what areas of Edinburgh they lived in. After marrige, she moved to Aberdeen and was living at Woodend Place, when she died in 1959.

At the time of my mothers marriage - she was living in King's Gate, Aberdeen - and I have pictures of a huge church, St. Niniens with her family outside.

Grandmothers name: Annie Maclauchian/McLauchlan Forsyth
Mother: Joan Holliday Sinclair

If anyone has any ideas what I could do next to find them I would be really gratefull.
Many thanks
Annie :-)

Hi Annie

If your grandmother was buried in Edinburgh, have you tried contacting Morton Hall Crematorium? They hold many burial records for Edinburgh. (but not records of private burial grounds)
Contact details can be found on this page.
http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/648/de ... emations/1

I'm not sure where you are located, but if you are anywhere near, you can make an appointment to go and look through the books. The first step would be to get a copy of your grandmother's death entry. If the death occurred before 1960 (you say it occurred in 1959, so there should be no problem), you will be able to download it from the Scotlands People web site. The info on that entry, including the place of death, and the usual addess at the time of death are the minimum info Morton Hall will need to be able to help at all.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Annie,

Another source to consider once you have the date of death from the death certificate is a funeral notice in one of the newspapers. From the funeral notice you should find which cemetery she was buried in. As you say your grandmother was living in Aberdeen at the time of her death, then the Press and Journal may have printed a funeral notice. As she appears to have had Edinburgh connections (and was buried there) then there may have been a funeral notice in The Scotsman.

I dont know about the P&J online archives, but the Scotsman archives online are only for 1950 and older so will be of no use to you. You would need to see the microfilms of the Scotsman archives in one of the libraries, such as the Edinburgh Central Library.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Annie,

Regarding the Aberdeen newspaper, and when you have the full date of death, you could try contacting Aberdeen library as discussed here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12777

Woodend place looks relatively undisturbed. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=57 ... 326.3,,0,0

If you want to figure out the Edinburgh street situation you could try the directories.

Post Office Edinburgh and Leith directory (Volume 1900-1901)
http://www.archive.org/stream/postoffic ... ch/brunton

Post Office Edinburgh and Leith directory (Volume 1910-1911)

Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Annie

The date and place of a cremation of a Joan Holliday Sinclair can be found by searching at www.deceasedonline.com .
I have never actually purchased anything from this site , so I've no idea what additional information is avallable - but the date / place appear free in the search results !

Hope this helps
Sally

Thank you all for responding especially Sally, you have no idea how much this means to me. I have gone to the site and certainly the date fits. I will 'join' to make sure. Perhaps almost closed one door but another one widens as the Buriel Records site has nothing for my Grandmother Annie McLauchlan Holliday Forsyth. Not to worry, I now have pointers where to look and who to contact which will then FINALLY lay a very unhappy part of my life to rest, and perhaps in time I will do a trip up to Scotland.

Thanks again :-)
Many thanks
Annie :-)

Link to Warriston Crematorium: http://www.edinburghcrematorium.com/warriston.html

Might be worthwhile contacting them direct?
