Dundonald Churchyard

Does anyone have access to either the burial records or headstone inscriptions for Dundonald Church in Ayrshire?

I know of the death, in childbirth, of a Jane/Jean/Jeanie Allan, age 32 (M.S. Smith) in June 1883 in Church Street, Dundonald but would love to know of she was buried there and whether her grave is marked.

Her husband, Robert Allan, was the local 'School Board Officer'.

Any assistance gratefully received.

I don't have access to any list of gravestones there, but there are a couple of leads you could follow:

a. the parish church has a very nice website with a contact form

and they say:

Dundonald Church possesses one of the most complete sets of Session Minutes in the West of Scotland. They start in 1602 and continue to the present day with breaks of only about 70 years.

There is a map of the graveyard with some notable burials and this snippet:

Also interred here are members of the Allan family who founded the Allan Shipping Line

b. the website had a date for the Dundonald Historical Society [sadly it's passed] I'd hope it was a regular event.
I'd try and contact them through the church.

c. there is a PDF of pre 1855 gravestones recorded in the 1970s

Obviously your 'girl' isn't there, but if they've gone to that much trouble there may be a more up to date list too.

d. right at the end I find it!

Many of the stones are still legible but more information regarding the inscriptions and locations can be found in the Troon & Ayrshire Family history Society publication “Monumental Inscriptions, Dundonald Parish Church, Incorporating the notes of W.W. Clearie” (ISBN 1 900171 50 3), a copy of which is available in the Church or via M.E.R.C., Troon Library, south Beach, Troon, KA10 6EF.

I'm on the otherside of the world so can not help much, but as you are new to this site, have you tried typing DUNDONALD into the search box at the top of the page. There are over 130 mentions as a surname, and as a place, including one long thread referring to the graves etc. You may find something interesting within them. The family names mentioned, would have more meaning if read by you.

I've been in touch with Dundonald Church through their website and received an almost immediate reply - telling me that there was no Church Street in Dundonald, and never had been. It was suggested that Jeanie's address at the time of her death probably related to Church Street, Irvine in the Parish of Dundonald.

I have since emailed the Minister of Fullarton Church on Church Street in Irvine, but as yet have had no reply. Why did I do that? Well Jeanie's husband, Robert Allan was a School Board Officer and there was a school attached to Fullarton Church and if the family had belonged to that church I don;t know where burials would have taken place.
