Bernera burial site search

Post by Scotgerbud » Wed Jan 30, 2013 10:06 pm

My great-great grandparents (John Beaton 1798-1894 and Ann MacAulay 1814-1903) immigrated to the Eastern Townships of Quebec, departing Lewis on the barque Barlow, saturday 21 June 1851. Their parents stayed behind on Lewis and I have not been able to learn much about them. When visiting Bernera several years ago I could not help but wonder if they might be buried in the old cemetary just up the road from the Bosta Iron Age site. I never did discover if they were buried there. Their names were Angus Beaton and Kirsty Mcneil, probably born in the mid to late 1700s, and Zachary MacAulay (1790-1856) and Margaret MacRichie (1790-pre 1855).

Any information anyone could offer would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,
Bud

Hi Bud,

From 1855 to 1860, the burial place was named on the death certificate. So if you download from http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (on a pay per view basis) the 1856 death certificate, you should learn of his burial place.

The pre-1855 one is a more difficult task. The Old Parochial Registers for Uig contain no death / burial data.

All the best,

AndrewP

Annie,
Yes, I am referring to the cemetary above the beach and the reconstructed iron age site. I visited there in 2004 but could find no evidence of my ancestors. I also spent some time in the museum in Breacleit. Lots of interesting information there, but again nothing that gave me much about the burial places of my ancestors. I will PM later in the spring. Thanks for your response.
Cheers....Bud
