Redlands - Stillbirth grave site June 1951

Post by darylrodger » Fri Apr 12, 2013 11:16 pm

Hi,

I'm wandering if anyone can tell me where my elder brother may be buried.

His name was Barry ? Gillespie and he died on 15th June 1951, at Redlands Hospital, Glasgow as he was a twin. My parents (both deceased) always told me he was buried in the Linn cemetery, but after doing some research found out it only opened in 1962. Someone in the Mitchell said that he may have been buried in Lambhill, as thats where all the stillbirths were taken.

Does anyone know where he might be ?

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

Have you tried contacting the NHS archives? http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/gghb/collects/hb10.html

If the baby was buried then Glasgow City Council should have a record. You can email them at les@glasgow.gov.uk but they may charge you for a search. Send them as much detail as you can and maybe you might get some kind soul who will do it for free.

Dealing with stillborn children back then was completely different from now - babies were sometimes buried in a communal grave as funeral services were not readily offered. You also couldn't name your stillborn baby so only the surname would be recorded.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,

Thanks for that. I've already contacted the NHS archives, and a chap at the Mitchell found a record regarding my mums stay at Redlands.
No medical records survive sadly. It was he that suggested my brother could be in Lambhill.

I'll try emailing Glasgow city council on Monday and see if I get any joy from them.

Regards,

Daryl
