Cemeteries at LOGIERAIT

Post by Billiegirl » Fri Jan 24, 2014 4:15 am

Hi, I'm hoping someone with local Perthshire knowledge can help me with some Logierait info.

My family has some connection with the Church at Logierait, but when I explored the area in street view I noticed a sign just outside Logierait pointing to another cemetery on the right hand side before you enter the village.

Can any Logierait local tell me what this cemetery is, and if possible, whether its older than the Church one?

Thanks :)

I don't claim to know the area, but I think I might have the answer. A note in the transcription of pre-1855 monumental inscriptions (North Perthshire Vol. 2, published by Scottish Genealogy Society) says: "The modern cemetery at Hillhead Logierait opened about 1950."

I hope this helps - but if researching Logierait, bear in mind that in former times it was a larger parish than it is now, with detached portions over a wide area. As well as the main churchyard, the MI transcriptions book lists five other burial grounds in various places.

Another resource for burial grounds is the database run by the Scottish Association of Family History Societies (http://safhs.org.uk/burialgrounds.asp), which lists a total of nine for Logierait. (The discrepancy might be because not all of them have pre-1855 memorials.) This site doesn't have transcriptions, but it tells you where you can find these; it also has a location map for each burial ground, and indicates who is responsible for it.

Thanks so much Arthur - that's the one because I remember seeing a Hillhead sign too! I thought it must be a fairly recent one as there's probably not much room left at Logierait Churchyard. I'll explore that link, that's very helpful.
I had no idea that it was quite a large parish in the old days, that is good to know, now I have quite a few cemeteries to look into!

Many thanks for your help. :D
