Colinton Church Cemetery.....

Post by BarbR » Tue Dec 27, 2005 1:01 am

From the recent free-for-all on the Scotman digital archive I found the my Gt Gt Grandparents were buried in Colinton Church cemetery in 1927 & 1937.
Would anyone know if there is a map of this cemetery? I would love to locate the monument (if there is one). I am in Canada but my sister in Edinburgh would take a look for me if it was made easy for her (she's not into dead relatives like some of us).

Thanks in advance for any help on this one.

kind regards

Barbara

Hi Barbara
The only way I can think of getting a map or directions is to contact Morton Hall Crematorium stating the names, locations and dates of death (and mention the cemetery which you already know as it will save them looking it up) and ask nicely for a map. They are usually very helpful (provided you don't write with a loooonnnng list of names, in which case they tend to quote rather generous sums for looking them up!! as I learnt from my experience of a few years ago...but don't let on I told you that :-$ )

address is:
Morton Hall Crematorium
Howdenhall Road
Liberton
Edinburgh
EH16 7TX
Telephone: 0131 664 4314
Fax: 0131 664 2031
eMail: env.con.svs@edinburgh.gov.uk

or perhaps contact Colinton Church directly:
Colinton Churchyard
Spylaw Road
EH13 0JR
Telephone: 0131 664 4314
Fax: 0131 664 2031
eMail: env.con.svs@edinburgh.gov.uk
...but looks like the phone and email reach the same place anyway!
http://a2z.edinburgh.gov.uk/displayEntr ... tleID=4627

maybe try this site instead:
http://www.colinton-parish.com/

but someone else may know another source of cemetery maps...
best wishes
Lesley

Hi Barbara,

I would expect the office at Mortonhall Crematorium should have the cemetery records and a map of the cemetery at Colinton Parish Church.

If you get a result from them and you want a photograph and/or a transcription of a headstone taken, please let me know. Colinton Parish Church and Cemetery are less than a mile from home for me.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Lesley and Andrew,

I have now received a reply from Morton Hall, can't say I am too much wiser..........
They confirmed that they are buried in Section B Lair No:12 at Colinton Churchyard. How do you figure out where this is without a map :?:

Perhaps someone is familiar with this cemetery and would be able to give a clue to help find this grave (don't know if there is a stone or not).

Kind regards
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

I will go into Colinton Library sometime this week. I am fairly sure that they have a book about the churchyard and cemetery MIs (monumental inscriptions). That book should include a map.

What names (and dates?) are you expecting to be there?

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Barbara
As I recently found out, even with names, a map and a lair number you may find there is nothing there... even for quite recent deaths. And this is not the first time this has happened to me either!

I took a trip through to Edinburgh last weekend hoping to solve a few mysteries with a burial in Comely Bank Cemetery in 1919. Of course by that time, in my head, the grave stone had all the dates I was looking for and close by were other family graves etc. etc. solving many loose ends....

When I found the grave site, which proved easier than some, as a nearby grave was clearly marked with a number which featured on my layout map, there was...nothing. Absolutely nothing. No stone. No marker of any sort. I have a photo of an area of grass with a few stray leaves, and I'm none the wiser. So, don't get your hopes up too much! I do hope you are luckier than I was. :D

Morton Hall will usually send a layout map, but only if you ask.
Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks both of you for such prompt replies. I know that there is a possibility that there will be no stone but it would be nice to know one way or the other...........

What I am looking for is:

John Poyner
born abt 1848 Co. Down, Ireland and died Lasswade July 1927
Isabella McGhie Poyner
born abt 1854 Hamilton, Lanark and died Currie September 1937

he was the Station Master of Balerno and retired 1914

Many thanks for taking the time to look, just when you are there anyway - don't make a special trip on my account!

Kind regards
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

I took a walk round Colinton Churchyard this afternoon and found the headstone you were seeking. There is so much information on it, that it has taken up both sides of the stone.

In loving memory of our sons
William A Poyner, died 3rd May 1896, aged 14 years
Thomas Poyner, died 10th April 1897, aged 11 years
James M Poyner, beloved husband of Thomasina Ross, died 26th Nov 1912, aged 32 years
Peter M Poyner, beloved husband of Emily Wilson, died of wounds in France, 31st October 1917, aged 33 years
Also John Poyner, father of the above, beloved husband of Isabella McGhie, died 12th July 1927 in his 80th Year
Also Isabella McGhie, beloved wife of the above John Poyner, died 12th Sep 1937 in her 84th year
Also their son Archibald M Poyner, died at Vancouver, 13th Jan 1941, aged 51 years

(second side of the headstone)
Also their sons
Prentice S Poyner, died 5th June 1944, aged 56 years
Andrew Poyner, died 23rd Sep 1955, aged 62 years
And their daughter Agnes Lockhart Poyner, beloved wife of the late John Stein Black, died 12th March 1959, aged 80 years
Also Isabella Shearer Poyner, daughter of John Poyner and Isabella McGhie, and beloved wife of the late Hope Scott, died 20th Aug 1981, aged 81 years.

I didn't have the camera with me, as the sky was dark grey, so not good for photography. If you would like photographs of the headstone, let me know and I can go there on a brighter day than today.

I would expect that Hope Scott (or his father?) is the man who gave his name to the car dealership in Currie - http://www.hopescott.co.uk/index.htm

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew,
This is wonderful, more than I could have hoped for :D
I had managed to find some of this info on Scotland's people but certainly not all of it.
I was unaware that one chap had come to Canada or of the car dealership in Currie and I didn't have all of the deaths. This is their whole family all on one stone!
Of course I would love a photograph but hesitate to ask when you have done so much for me already - this is like Christmas in January and I thank you for it.

Kind Regards
Barbara
