Listing of Burial Places in Scotland.....

Post by DavidWW » Wed Feb 01, 2006 9:53 am

I just found out on Monday that SAFHS have a project on the go to list burial places in Scotland, - anticipated completion date is March 2007.

Note that this listing will list the locations only, not those buried there.

The Scottish NBI Project continues to proceed slowly, hampered currently by the recent resignation due to ill-health of the co-ordinator, and low interest on the part of some FHSs, who have given the NBI a low priority among their various projects.

Hello David. I read with interest your message of the poor response by F.H.S.s in recording Scotland's Graveyard's. We in Motherwell Heritage Society have surveyed and indexed eight Graveyard's in and around Motherwell, these are on C.D. and can be viewed in Motherwell Heritage Centre, or by contacting, Ron. E-mail: ronald1_78@blueyonder.co.uk

Yours, Ron. Porteous.

I would like everyone to know that RON is a wonderful, helpful and generous individual. He helped me to find a death that had me stumped for a long time. If you want to know anything about Motherwell, he's yer man.

I would like to echo Susie Q's sentiments, Ron has discovered my great grandparents last resting places which have been a source of great mystery for many years for my family who tried a few times to find them.

I am now in a position, thanks to Ron and the other members of Motherwell Heritage Society, to be able to take my 93 year old great aunt to see her parents graves for the first time in her life.

It is the stuff of dreams and I will be forever grateful. Thank you to all those who worked hard and gave their time to this scheme so that others can benefit.

Thank you CatrionaL, I just got off the phone to my cousin and she is bursting with excitement, we're going to take my g.aunt there as soon as possible. I'm just so happy we can get her to the grave at last so she can lay some flowers. I've been on a high all day what a lucky break!!! :D

For the many who will be interested, all available Lair records for Inverclyde (Kilmacolm & Quarriers Village, Port Glasgow, Greenock, Gourock, Inverkip and Wemyss Bay) are being digitized as I write this.

The chap in charge is very keen and will be cross referencing all data to actual maps of the site so that any visitors can easily find exactly where (even unmarked) dearly departed are buried.

Greenock, alone, has upwards of 250,000 plantees from 1847ish so it may be a while before everything is up-and-running.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Andy,
That is indeed great news. You have probably already found everything for my family that is available at the library. My next step was/is to spend some time in Greenock to go through those cemeteries and cemetery records. I have but four more days to work and then there is retirement!! With finally time enuf to do the things that I want to do, if something can be done from afar, please let the chap doing the indexing know that I would be more than willing to lend a hand.

Hi Catherine,

I wonder if you know just how big the Greenock Cemetery is. .........it's HUGE. It's not the type of cemetery you can just wander around and find your relatives. It's very hilly and I know I was out of breath climbing the hills.

It would be a good idea for you to contact the cemetery before your trip and ask them to find the locations of the gravesites for you. They are swamped with requests and they may not be able to do the searches while you wait. They now charge for this service.

I have a map of the cemetery. I will email you a copy.

Regards,

Ina
