Hi Folks,
I hope someone out there can help me.
James Blair died between 1939 and 1945. His wife Mary died in 1975.
His address was Golspie Street, Govan. I can not find his death in "Scotland's People" - too many James Blairs. So I am hoping to find the cemetery where he was buried.
I e-mailed the Mitchell library two months ago, but so far no answer from them.
Thank you,
Moreen

Have you tried using the "year of birth" option in the death index search to reduce the number of possibilities?
For example if I search in that period for a James BLAIR born 1910 +/- 2 years in Glasgow City, there's only one.
Given those years of 1939 to 1945, if there's a service death involved there's no guarantee that the record made it back to Scotland.

From Govan, as far as a burial place is concerned, there's a choice of several.
Craigton Cemetery - Berryknowes Road [ or Paisley Road West I Can't remember the 'official' main entrance] It's in a horrible state and the records were very mixed up at one stage - the Glasgow City now own and operate it.
The crematorium is there too.
Cardonald Cemetery - off Corkerhill road
Those are the 2 obvious options, there's the Southern Necropolis at Caledonia Road in the Gorbals on the South side as well.
It may depend too on where he originally came from and where his family were buried, what room was in their lairs etc.
But as David said, during the war years things would have been different.

Govan cemeteries.
To David and Wonka2,
Thank you both for the quick response.
I am not sure of James Blair's birthdate or where he was born.
I think James may have come over from Ireland.
He worked in Clydeside.
I had hoped to visit possible cemeteries in Govan late Spring, when I
also visit PRONI.
Those Scots who left in the 1600's to go to Ireland then returned in dribs
and drabs are certainly hard to track down.

Re: Govan cemeteries.
In the year of birth option you can choose a range of up to +/- 10 years, whcih will cover a good range, and more, if you first choose one year of birth then another year earlier or later by 20 years!Moreen Blair wrote:To David and Wonka2,

.....snipped........
It's most likely that he was of like age with his wife.

Hello all,
The chances are high, coming from Golspie Street, that he would be either buried or cremated at Craigton. But obviously that's only if he was living there at time of death. If they were Catholic he may be buried at Barrhead.
Wilma, I'm glad to say it is much tidier now that the council have taken it over although they don't quite have the run of the records yet as far as I know.
Moreen, If you know the date of his wife's death you should give the GCC a phone, to see if she is buried there, if you're near - or you can email (they are not too quick at replying but they will). You may be in luck and they will be buried together.

Hi Annette and Moreen
I recently contacted the GCC for my own Blairs' burials. They replied as follows:
"Regrettably given the high volume of genealogical searches it has become necessary to instigate a standard administrative charge, presently set at £54. This charge may be waived if the name of the cemetery is provided...........
Alternatively you might find it of interest to be made aware of the facilities offered by the Mitchell Library. Much of our archive material is held there on microfiche and access can be afforded should you wish to undertake this work personally."
Kind regards
Catriona

I had a similar experience. I asked for a search on Southern Necropolis Cemetery which was unsuccessful. My Mail said:CatrionaL wrote:I recently contacted the GCC for my own Blairs' burials. They replied as follows:

"Unfortunately if you do not have the name of the cemetery and you wish a general search of the other cemeteries operated by the City Council to be undertaken then a standard search fee of £54.00 would have to be made."
Would anyone know what would be the nearest cemetry to Picadilly Street in the 1840s?
