New Church Society, Glasgow.....

Does anyone know where this is, please? A portrait of Alexander Humboldt Sexton (my gt uncle) was bequeathed to the society in 1941 by his son (who died in Jersey) and I am curious to know what happened to it.

The portrait was by James Ramsey Russell - tried googling for him, but no results.

I wonder if the Germans kept the portrait as George Alex (the son) died during the war and, if so, is it gracing some nouveau riche German family's picture gallery under the guise of a German ancestor. Would love to know the answer.

Hello

No luck with your painting in particular, but have found some information on the artist James Russell born 1867 Edinburgh.

and a link to a portrait of his of Major Topham

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for that. He seems to have been quite a good painter. I wonder why he isn't more well known - perhaps he only painted relatively unknown people.
