Hi Krissy,

Afraid I don't know anything about the Airth Castle cemetery, but if you contact Elma Lindsay , the Family History person for Stirling Council, she should be able to help. Her e-mail is lindsaye@stirling.gov.uk.

Also found the following site when I did a Google search

Hi Krissy
I'm sure one of the quarterly magazines called "Calriata" or something like that, done by FHS had a list of the old graves at Airth Castle at somepoint. I know the magazine is available in our local library. If you have no joy with the contact, get back to me with the names and I will go to the library and see if they are mentioned there. It would always be worth a try anyway!

Hi lainey,
thankyou for that offer i may need it, i only emailed the contact yesterday so will give it a few days and if no joy will certainley get back to you but if in the meantime you do get bored i will give you the names anyway, they are john dewar and christian drummond i believe they also have a son george dewar there, im really curios about the emblems on the headstones but cant seem to find out what they mean, i know the lair was dated 1786. but also know that both john and christian were still producing little dewars up until 1791, again another mystery. ooh! life is never simple is it?
many thanks for your kind offer ,talk to you soon

Hi Krissy
Ok Heres what it says.......
170. FLAT. 1.60 x 0.70 m. Illus. 1786/JOHN:DEW_/CRISTIAN:DRWMMOND.(134)

1. EACH STONE IS GIVEN A NUMBER WHICH APPEARS ON THE PLAN [170]
2. THE TYPE OF STONE, WHETHER FLAT OR HEAD
3. IF A HEADSTONE, THEN THE SHAPE OF THE TOP OF THE STONE
4. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE STONE STARTING WITH HEIGHT, THEN THE WIDTH AND THE THICKNESS
5. THE INSCRIPTION
6. THIS IS THE REF NO USED BY MITCHELL AND MITCHELL.

ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SOME PICS OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF OTHER GRAVES I CAN FIND NONE FOR THIS ONE, OR ANY REF TO WHAT 3 HORNS WOULD STAND FOR, BUT MY GUESS WOULD BE GAME KEEPER ETC...

NOW ON THE STONE NEXT TO THIS
171. HEAD. TRIANGLE. 175/AGED 65 YEARS (133)
NO NAMES ARE LISTED ON THIS, BUT THE INDEX SAYS IT IS FOR A CHARLES DEWAR, SO NO DOUBT SOME SORT OF RELATION!

CHAS AND JOHN ARE THE ONLY 2 LISTED THERE, SO HOPE THIS HELPS SLIGHTLY?! I ALSO HAVE THE BOTHKENNAR BOOK AT THE MOMENT, AND CHECKED THAT BUT NOTHING FOR DEWAR THERE EITHER. JUST THOUGHT AS IT WAS THE NEXT AREA ALONG, IT WOULD BE WORTH A WEE LOOK

hi lainey,
thankyou for that , the 3 horns have been mystifying me but yes your probably right about gamekeeper perhaps he was at some point employed at the castle will have to see if i can find out but where i can do that is another mystery, charles dewar is in fact their son , i found that much out , do you think it would be worth me contacting the mitchell library to see if there is any more info, these 2 are really elusive although the headstone gives a date of 1786 im sure this must have been when it was purchased as they were still having kids in 1791.
thankyou for looking it has been helpful i guess i was hopin for perhaps ages etc but since they have been there a long time i should imagine that info has since long gone
will let you know if i can find anymore thankyou again and if you do come across any more dewars you know i would appreciate it

Hi Krissy

I doubt they would put up a stone just to make public claim to their lair - way too expensive.
The most likely explanation is that they purchased the lair to bury a child who died early after all in those days at least 25% of children did not survive to adulthood. The death rate was even higher in the towns.
Have any Old Parochial records survived for the parish. They might have information on the hire of Mortcloths which would give some clues to other children.
