Post by dstew » Sun Apr 16, 2006 2:18 am

I was wondering if anyone who is going to visit the Peirshill Cemetry in Edinburgh if some one who could do me one giant big favour and take a picture of a gravestone for me. It is of my greatuncles wife Mary Dodds died 20 May 1975 her married name is Stewart wife of Roderick Stewart .

Hi Dstew

I noticed you had had no offers of help with your request. Piershill cemetery is a reasonable size and you could spend an enjoyable,
but unsuccessful day wandering through.
Do you have any clue about where the lair might be in the cemetery?

I don't think they have onsite offices now where they could check lairs.

This will bring your request forward again and may catch someone's attention. Fingers crossed.

Hi Dstew
Piershill, opened in 1887 & contains many Jewish burials. It is a private cemetery. If you have no note of the location of the grave, the contact is:

Edinburgh Eastern Cemetery Co Ltd
50 Portobello Road
Edinburgh
EH8 7BN
cemetery tel: 0131 620 7025
monumental tel: 0131 559 2118

I would hope they should be able to give you the reference for the grave if you can give them the name, date of death and place of death. I'd be tempted to also ask for a map or directions to the spot, if, as Russell mentions, it is a large cemetery.

Meanwhile, I found these pictures of Piershill on the web:

and this interesting article from a couple of years ago:

Hi Russell
I had phone the Piershill Cemetery and was given some information on the where abouts of Mary Stewarts Gravestone.Mary is the Daughter of William Dodds & Mary Jeffery She is buried in section B And Lair no 405. I was told by the lady to go into the public Offices and they will pass on any directions.
I hope that someone could help
