Leith memorial inscriptions

Post by jennyblain » Sat Sep 09, 2006 2:14 pm

Does anybody have access to Memorial Inscriptions for Leith (probably Leith South), or burial/lair records?

I'm looking for anything with Philp or Philip, or for Marion Cunningham, from the 1780s up to mid 19th c.

Hi Jenny
From New North Leith Churchyard: PHILIP imo Mary an amiable sister a. 21, Mary a virtuous mother a. 77, Robert a christian father a. 87, Robert of Crail grandfather a. 88, Agnes d. 20 Feb. 1873. Erected by Robert Philip of Leith 3 Sep 1888?
New North Leith
This Church is in Maderia Street, Leith and was designed by William Burn and opened in 1818. The church was renovated in 1950 and is still in use. There may have been more gravestones around this church, but those that survive are to be found on the south east boundary wall. The stones in this churchyard were surveyed in 2004. From Leith Monumental Inscriptions published by the Scottish Genealogy Society.
The only mention of a Philip in South Leith is on the War Memorial for Army and RAF and it is for a Simon C Philip.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Hi Jenny
South Leith MIs - slight variations:

Robert Coldstream, wife Elizabeth Phillips d. 18 March 1865 aged 90
John Phillips WS, 6 June 1842 - 25 Dec 1909 (connection with Coldstream above)

Army & RAF 1914-1918: Simon C. Philp, as Cariad menitoned.

No sign of Cunningham.

Mentions of several Cunninghams to be found here though:

Thanks both Caraid and Lesley. These inscriptions are interesting though I don't know if they are related.. there seem to have been several Philip lines in South Leith in the early 19th century, and I'm not sure which ones these are from. Two brothers and their families moved around the 1830s and 40s (to Greenock) and I'm not sure if other family members stayed in Leith.

However, I've found an old email that mentions the tomb of a James Philip inside the church, dated 1836, but doesn't give the inscription.. is this listed in any of the MIs that you have?

Trying to work out what is going on with the MI Caraid gave, and who the stone was erected for, as there is only one date of death given...

Thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny
The book of MIs says that it does list MIs from within the church, so it does not look like your man is listed here. However, I have a feeling that the South Leith listing is not complete: this is based on a stroll round the churchyard a few years ago when I took a note of graves of interest. I found a Nimmo grave which, when I checked later, is not listed in the book, so it is quite possible there may be other omissions.....

However, South Leith OPRs are really good on deaths, so possibly worth following up.

Best wishes
Lesley
