Looking for ancestor connections, A tombstone was erected somewhere in Scotland by a John Dick in memory of his parents who came to Canada in 1821 on the David of London.
"1833, Erected by: John Dick, Merchant, Whitburn
In memory of his father John Dick, who died 11th March, 1833, aged 86,of his Mother Janet Dick, who died 11th December 1828, Age 86, of their son James who died in Canada June 1821, aged 44 years, their Son, William, who died in Jamaica 1803, age 24 and their daughter Agnes who died May 9th, 1826, age 58."
Would appreciate any comments as to where Whitburn is. I have no further information on John Dick other than he was born in Bathgate, W Lothian on Mar 29,1775.
James & Janet's daughter Elizabeth married Wiliam Gardiner, my g grandfather
Thank you

Hi Izzie

Whitburn is also in West Lothian - very near Bathgate. Look here to see map of West Lothian :

Hi Izzie

I noticed you said the tombstone was erected "somewhere" in Scotland. It is actually in Kirkton Cemetery, Bathgate.

There are 5 headstones in a row, all having the surname Dick, which would suggest that it is the same family.

Do you know about the other 4? If not I can send you details

Jean

Hi Jean,

Thank you, for the location of the Cemetery, I would really appreciate the details. When the Dicks moved to Canada John Dick left behind 4 brothers & 3 sisters that I have been unable to trace other than what is written on the stone above.

Hi Jean,
Just wanted to thank you for the additional records, I have managed to place some more Dicks thanks to your additonal cemetery listings.
Now on to the search for the "missing generation" to link to the 1881 census.
Thank you.
