Please help! Are these Poorhouses, 1891/1901 Census? .....

Post by Jockbird » Wed Aug 16, 2006 5:02 pm

Hello!

I need a wee bit of help please regarding my Gx2 Grandfather and his whereabouts in the 1891 & 1901 census.

George Gray Millar was born circa 1841 in Hamilton, Lanark and was a Cooper by trade.

I've tracked him with his wife & family in 1871 and 1881 (in Canning Street, Glasgow at that time), lost wife for 1891 but found her again in 1901 in Moncur Street Glasgow.....

.....BUT George is found as an Inmate in an establishment in Anderston in 1891 with the GROS ref:- 644/10 092/10 004 and in 1901 he's still an inmate in an establishment in Plantation GROS ref: 646/1L 049/1L 012.

I did buy the census pages going back to the beginning of the 1891 census but still couldn't ascertain where this was....and promptly ran up a huge bill.

George finally passed away on 13th February 1910 at 167 Glasgow Road, which I believe was the site of the Govan Poorhouse Hospital, although by then his usual residence was 45 Govan Road, Govan.

Can anybody please tell me were he was in 1891 and 1901?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Donna

Hello Donna,

you may not have noticed, but there are buttons for "View free header page" and they give details of the area covered without using credits.

In 1891 George Millar was at The Model Lodging House, 105 Hydepark Street, Glasgow. In 1901 he was at the Rutland Model Lodging House, 21-23 Govan Road, Plantation.

You could contact ScotlandsPeople (through the "Contact Us" link on every page) to see if they would consider refunding credits through your fruitless search backwards, but they would need to be in a sympathetic mood. Otherwise, I am sure that SP would not object if I forwarded the header images to you, so send me an e-mail if you want them.

Regards,

John

Hello Donna,

What was the district of the 167 Glasgow Road address?

It doesn't sound like Govan Poorhouse although I must say George sounds like he would have applied at some point.
I'll have a look next time I'm at The Mitchell for an application.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hello Annette,

I've been a right numpty ....for the second time on this thread  ....it should read 167 Renfrew Road, Govan, which I believe is the site of the poorhouse hospital.

It looks like from at least 1891 until his death in 1910 he frequented Model Lodging Houses, his last one being at 45 Govan Road which I have just checked on the valuation rolls for Glasgow.

If you could bear me in mind next time you are at the Mitchell that'd be fantastic. His wife was living happily with the kids in Moncur Street for several more years so any information on what put him in this unfortunate situation would be great.

Thank you everso much
Donna

Hi Donna

The commonest reason for men to be forced to use Model Lodging houses was - Drink!

OK others with mental instability - such as schizophrenia where they converse with non-existent others was another reason but by and large it was a fondness for the bottle.
This was not uncommon in the late 1800's in big cities especially where booze was cheap and working opportunities scarce.

Hello Russell,

Yes, I was very tempted to to suggest that but thought I'd better look at his application first. :)
