I have a the death record (1873 Lochee) of one of my wife's female ancestors. Earlier census details suggest she was native to Dalkeith. In the record, the deceased's parent's names are somewhat vague. Her father has no christian name (although his surname is correct) while her mother has a very unusual maiden surname. Additionally, there are a couple of (annotations?) against that unusual surname. Does that suggest the informant (son) did not know/unsure of (1) his grandfather's christian name and (2) his grandmother's maiden surname? Does it appear that those annotations would have been made at the time of registration?
Cheers, Bill.

Re: An unusual name.
They look like suggested alternative spellings for her maiden surname. I think the handwriting is the same as the rest of the certificate, so was probably done at the time of registration.
