Jamieson and Campbell in Greenock.....

Post by Wendy » Mon Mar 28, 2005 7:39 pm

Have a question !!!!!
Can anyone help me find out who John Jamieson's parents were....I am having computer issues and can't get them straightened out as yet......

The info I have so far :

John Jamieson born 1843 Greenock, Scotland ...marries Flora Campbell 16 Nov 1866 Middle or New Parish, Greenock (she was b. 1845 Vaternish,Inverness,Scotland)

Children of the union were:
Mary Ann b.13 Apr 1869 Greenock
Ann Dunlop b.17 Feb 1871 Greenock
Jane Boyle b.02 Nov 1872 Greenock
Catherine Mc D b.19 Jul 1874 Greenock
George D. b.1875 Greenock cannot get date
John b. 1881 Greenock cannot get date d.19 Jun 1965 Rockhampton, Australia

I have parents for Flora Campbell as : James Campbell and Ann McLeod...but thats all I have been able to find out....
If anyone could help me out would be much appreciated as the computer is getting awfully close to being pitched out the window...... :(

John Jamieson

Hi Wendy,

Does the 1866 MC not have John's parents' names?

I can see a few John JAMIESONs of about the right age in the 1851 census.

Hi Jack,

Thanks......I guess I will need to send for more certificates to get this figured out...

....and yes maybe it would be better to just walk away from the computer when it acts up....have a so called "expert" coming to look at it ...so will see how good he is ..... the last one didn't fix it so we'll see
Thanks again

I don't think any of the above people were John's parents. I'm fairly sure I've come across this lot before and the Parents were Alexander Jamieson and Ann Dunlop who married in 1835 in Greenock, which fits perfectly with the childrens' names. No recorded births to this couple.

The place in Inverness should be Waternish, the following McLean family were related to my paternal uncle's wife but I've got a feeling the McLeods and Margaret are related to yours (somehow):

Alexr. MC LEOD U 25 M Waternish, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Lodger
Occ: Coachman
Donald MC LEOD U 38 M Waternish, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Lodger
Occ: Sugar Porter

I think these may be related too:

Janet MC SWEEN U 64 F Skye, Inverness, Scotland
Rel: Boarder

Also in Kelly Street:

I'll eat my hat if this isn't John's sister-in-law!!

Looked at various Jamieson births in Greenock and there is another with Boyle as the Middle name. The parents were Alexander and ELIZABETH Clark who married in Greenock in 1865. They Produced:

1. JANET BOYLE JAMIESON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 02 JUN 1865 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

2. ALEXANDER JAMIESON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 28 JUN 1867 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

Then ALSO on Kelly Street:

Dwelling: 56 Upper Kelly Street
Census Place: West Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

Robert W. JAMIESON U 19 M Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Joiner
Martin JAMIESON U 18 M Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Law Clerk (General)

A quick search for the birth of son Martin around 1863 in Greenock gives the following.

MARTIN JAMIESON
Male

Event(s):
Birth: 24 JAN 1863 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

Christening:
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: ALEXANDER JAMIESON Family
Mother: JEAN BOYLE

Alexander and Jean had the following:

1. DAVID TAYLOR JAMIESON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 08 SEP 1864 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

2. ROBERT WALTER JAMIESON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 06 JUL 1861 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

3. MARTIN JAMIESON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 24 JAN 1863 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

Now I'd be willing to bet that this is John and Alexander's Step Mother. And the following is their Uncle:

Dwelling: 1 Brisbane St
Census Place: West Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203575 GRO Ref Volume 564-3 EnumDist 31 Page 23

Rel: Wife
Mary MC DONALD U 63 F Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland
Rel: Sister In Law
Sarah MC KINNON U 19 F Mull, Argyll, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: General Servant

It's very easy to find Robert and Alexander's birth's in Erskine with a search 10 years either way of 1815. Loads of siblings too.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Wendy,

I've got my hat ready! but doubt whether the teeth will have to be sharpened.

Can't wait to see if "Birds of a Feather" turn up trumps yet again.
