Motherwell would come under the Parish of DALZIEL.

The parishes to either side would be Shotts and Bothwell.

I hope that helps.

Hi Wilma, thank you for that clue. I looked at Dalziel, for deaths 1900 to 1954, but nothing jumps out for me, births are not an option sadly, I am trying to find children that relates to Malcolm Brown Hyslop and Margaret Howat, they married in New Cumnock 1899, I have them in the 1901 census in Ayr, 128 Cross St, no children.

Malcolm Hyslop's father, James Hyslop died in 1914 and Malcolm was the informant and listed his address as 83 Camp St, Motherwell, Malcolm's mother died in 1924 and again Malcolm was the informant listing his address and 48 Emily Drive, Motherwell. So I figure they must have had children in Motherwell between 1914 and 1924, and I just thought a death query in Motherwell would give me some results and clues ??

Malcolm Hyslops wife, Margaret, died in 1952 at Low Hospital, Carluke, usual residence, 48 Emily Drive, Motherwell, there is also an RCE on the death certificate, so this tells me they lived in Motherwell for some time, Malcolm was listed as a "grocer, manager, retired"

So they were in Motherwell from 1914 to 1952, hopefully I can find a Hyslop marriage to discover the children of this couple ???

All suggestions and options welcome on this one !!

A look at map 31 Airdrie & map 23 Hamilton at NLS:

might help.

LAW Hospital is outside Carluke.

Hi Linda,

I have family in Motherwell and have found Death entries in Law Hospital (Carluke) and in Major Glasgow hospitals such as Royal Imfirmary (Hillhead, Glasgow).

As for births, you could also try Bellshill and Cambusnethan (Wishaw). The major Maternity hospital is in Bellshill and anyone born there would be registered in Bellshill (I was). I am not sure if the hospital was operating as early as 1914 (but worth a try).

Regards,

David

Wilma and David, thank you for your info on this, at least now I have an idea where to look.

Linda and David.

Bellshill Maternity Hospital opened in 1921. I worked as a midwife there in the 1960s and was so disappointed to discover, on a sentimental visit to the area, two or three years ago, that the hospital had closed.

All the best

Hi Linda,

You've probably already done this but I also have Hyslops in my tree but have found them under Hyslop, Hislop, Hislep, and Hyslep.

Cheers

Stuart

Do you have any Hyslops in the Dumfriesshire area - around Sanquhar or Durrisdeer?

Hi Mary,

Not too sure yet, they all seemed to have come over from Ireland and stayed in the Tradeston area of Glasgow from 1867, however, I am still tracing death and marriage cert for a few of the girls

Margaret B30.10.1872
Jane B17.09.1874
Agnes B07.09.1880
Anna Eliza B20.02.1877

so you never know

Cheers

Stuart
