How weird is this but this death is on the same page as one of "mine".
The death is reported by his son David & the Mother's name is given as Meraloton with a ? next to it(never seen that before!) m/nBrown & John Cumming -occupation looks like Labourer.
So looks like the right one & confirming his parents as John & something approaching Maitland/Magdalane.
John Cummings and Maitland Brown, East Neuk of Fife

Yep & most of my Scotts stuck around Midlothian/Roxb for this time scale.
Then an offshot & another Scott went to Fife in the late 1800's.
Turns out there was this one already there so you wonder if they went to join them or was it just coincedence-were they even aware of each other?
Yes Sarah I was trying to pronounce the name in a Fifer accent too.
Now if you find that time machine mind & leave a space for me!

Great stuff folk and many thanks!
It does look as if John is a missing son of John and Maitland's (prounounced pretty much as it look - Mateland).
Meraloton does suggest that the informant really wasn't sure what his grandmother was called, perhaps she died before he was born or when he was very young.
Regards,
George
