I can understand census and death entries showing a shortened name, but I can't say I have ever heard of a child being baptised with the shortening of the given name.

Just a thought - Is there any possibility that the Marjory marriage you have isn't your lady after all?

My initial thoughts were as you mention, especially as the details of the marriage were the same in both parishes, but as I can find no trace of a Marjory, either in the baptisms, deaths or censuses, then who is she and where did the couple go. If this Marjory is not May then I'd expect to find another William Ruddiman which I have so far not found. I'm not too worried if I can't find their marriage as I have all their other details but as this couple were in the right parishes in the right time frame I'm inclined to accept them as possible candidates.

Thanks
Geoff

She was always known as May in every instance except this possible marriage. May Donald was baptised at Methlick, Aberdeen on 2 Sep 1799 and the father was John. In 1851 May's son George was with John Donald aged 79 years at New Deer, Aberdeenshire and on her death certificate her father was given as John Donald. The only child of May and William with a baptism register entry shows one witness as John Donald. This may have been her father or more likely her brother.

Yes I have a copy of this census and as you have noticed William is missing. I haven't found his death record but it must have been sometime after Barbara was born in 1843 and before the 1851 census.
In the 1861 census May stated she was born Cumineston and in the 1871 she was from Monquhiter. At no time does May say she was born in Banff although she lived at Gamrie from 1841 until she died in 1876.

Thanks for your interest

Ah well, sometimes thinking out of the box works, but not in this case.

Having had similar "missing in action" rellies (so to speak), some of whom have still not surfaced  , I can really sympathise with you.
