Hi Carol,

Old Church was one of the quoad sacra parishes within the High Church (or Edinburgh City) Parish. See the following map.

All the best,

AndrewP

A few minutes later: Had I read Lesley's earlier post properly, I would have seen that she has already given the link to this map.

Good morning everyone,

Thanks for all of your input! I'm not at all familiar with Edinburgh so I was pretty much lost when I started investigating this branch.

The think the Old Church next to Canongate is the correct one. Further reading on the website posted for this family turned up a burial for a William Clirehugh who died suddenly Feb. 14, 1823 and was buried at Canongate. The person doing the research thought that this was her William Clirehugh, but hadn't confirmed it yet.

Next question: Are the MI's for the cemetery at Canongate available? The Roll of Burgesses has several mentions of a John Clirehugh who died in 1769 and I'd like to try to find any other Clirehugh's who might be in the neighborhood to take this family back another generation.

Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Yes, they are published and I have a copy - but no sign of any name in the index similar to Clirehugh under letters C or K. :(

As far as I remember there are MIs for Greyfriars on the Scotsfind site - maybe worth a look.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley,

I just spent a good little while looking at the databases on the www.scotsfind.org site. I didn't find any Clirehughs or variants in Grayfriars, but the Surname Index had a interesting note:

"Variants of the surname Clerihew 'An Aberdeenshire surname' An early record is William Clerihew of Kegge was convicted of Profanation... in 1644."

Then they list: Clereheugh, Vair barber and wigmaker...
William, barber and wigmaker, B. and G.
10 Sep 1793

Clerihue, John, vintner B. and G. 1759
(See Guy Mannering, chap. xxxvi)

Are you familiar with the Guy Mannering book? Any idea if it is available anywhere? I think this might be the same one that I found on eBay a couple of weeks ago, but their price is out of my range!

SP has a John Clearihue married to Janet Gibson and having a daughter Mary in 1743 in Edinburgh. This is the earliest date for any Clerihew that I have been able to find in Edinburgh but there is no marriage OPR for him.

www.scotsfind.org is a terrific site for anyone with relatives around Edinburgh. Click on the Free databases, then on Processes and Decreets if you want to see what kind of mischief people were up to back then!

Try your local library... surely they would have Sir Walter Scott? If not, I have a complete set left by my great aunt. Won't part with any of the volumes, but if you want me to look anything up, I'd be happy to.

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

No problem. I just found the book online and read chapter 36. More fame for my extended family--the Clerihue's mentioned was a tavern where Mannering went looking for Mr. Pleydell!

The Roll of Burgesses entries are for John Clerihue, vintner so maybe the tavern was a real place?!

Still need the connection back to Aberdeenshire for these people, but it's funny the places a search can take you!
