Thanks for these links. I've had a look and they seem very good. Unfortunately I'm now convinced he's not mine - found a reference to him on Ancestry where he was described as 'Captain'; also found he'd left a will. All things together, I doubt he'd have started life as a gardener and had a son who was a quarrier!

Ah, well. At least you've now learned something about the East India Company! You never know when it might come in handy :wink:
