Thanks Sally
I will definitely check this lad out, sounds about right. I have been slowly checking out the ships but it was a daunting task because I had a ten year gap to sort, so hopefully this is the one. I have to admit I began at 1866 and was working backwards from what I knew.
I also noticed some of the surnames you are searching match some of mine.
Regarding my John above - his father's name was also John and he was married to Agnes Montgomery.
And I have John Joseph Attwell married to Sarah Ann Fisher - in Tipton, Staffordshire, England.
Maybe somewhere there is a match in our families?
Anyway I thank you again for possibly finding my John. If I can return the favour sometime with searches I would be only too happy.
I also must say thanks to those dedicated people who keep these forums up and running, without them my searching could take many more years but with the help of others, even if it is only a suggestion, has made a great difference for me and I am sure many others.

Hi Shirley/Research
Mt Montgomery Line remains short . I have a John Montgomery born
about 1801 - 1805 ( per 1841 census in Midlothian) . Dead before 1851 .
He was a butcher by trade. He married Marion Anderson 6th Aug 1827 in Edinburgh . None of the kids are to be found in the indexes.. I have established that they had at least 4 from census details but given the gaps I believe there may have been more and thus I couldn'r even begin to guess at parents from the kids names. They lived in the Canongate area. In other words, I am currently at a
with Montgomery.
My Fisher line starts with a Thomas Fisher born about 1819 in Yester, East Lothian . I know a bit about his mother , who was not a Fisher , nor does she seem to have been married to one. You've guessed - I am currently at a ....
with Fisher.
Does no harm to ask and maybe now we we have both posted details on these lines, some 7th cousin twice removed or such might recognise our folks.
Hope you find your John.

Re: where might I find records.....
I know it's been a long time since I have been on this forum, so I just wanted to fill you in on my research.
John Manners b 1842 Greenock Scotland - confirmed - I made a trip to Greenock 2009, however, his actual parentage is still a big
I cannot for the life of me find his father John Manners married to Catherine Campbell as shown on John (b1842) death certificate. The only one that fits is John Manners married to Margaret Campbell 16 Aug 1841. Poor John was lost at sea that same month. All the details fit for this parentage, especially as I came across 47 letters written to John (b1842) from uncles and cousins, which seem to confirm all but the name Margaret. John and his mother Margaret lived with Margaret's mother Sarah for a while in Greenock then they ended up in the Greenock Poorhouse after Sarah's second husband William Williamson died. Sarah's first husband was Archibald Campbell - he was the nephew of 'Highland Mary' Robert Burns (poet) love interest.
John (b1842) worked for Charles Scott Shipping Co. and did indeed come to Australia on board the ship 'European', (this ship was made by the Scott Co.) He arrived in Feb 1857. I still don't know for sure what he did on his arrival, though I know he worked on at least one other ship but I think he began working as a blacksmith - I presume he learned the trade at Scott Co.
In 1866 John married Emma Hickox and I know just about all about their lives. I'm working on a book about them.
So thank you all to those who gave me direction and suggestions.
