Wee Charles looks innocent enough on his christening day, but he went on to win a medal in the Strichen Illegitimacy Olympics
Love it!

Well I don't think they had much to do up there, lack of facilities for the youth etc...or perhaps the message of Free Love hit up there some 150 years early!
Now the OPRs are online I plan to have a good look at my Wilsons so I'll keep you posted if I do find a link between the two, Christian Wilson was a name used for one of the daughters of John Wilson, James Wilson's son, so it's not outwith the realms of possibility that there is a family link....I've got about 4 different lines (well different at the moment) up there in those villages.
When you come to your Strichen & surrounding area project give me a yell and I'll let you know what I've got. There's stuff from about 1750- 60 until 1881 when my last lot left Turriff....well of the ones I've tracked so far.
Thanks for the deciphering, perhaps the marriage banns will shed more light re the address as they were only a year or so before......adds another to the list for the next bash on SP....credit card quakes with fear

Well remember I'm having a couple of days at NRH Donna so if you and Sarah come up with a few targets I can have a go in March!
Sarah - as Donna says we've a load of relations up that way so any extra info we can come across between us would be fascinating all round.
I don't have as much time to spend online as I'd like (it's that terrible thing called work that keeps me away from genealogy) but I will add in stuff if I find anything of use.

Thanks for the offer, Deborah!
I'll let you know if I have anything specific to ask. One of these days I'd love to read the Kirk Session minutes for Strichen. I have never found so many illegitimate children anywhere else. Whoever kept the baptism books got pretty blasé about it. There was no bandying about of big words like "fornication" as in some parishes, just a straightforward:
“Jany 26 [1840] Charles Jeils & Mary Murison, two unmarried persons, had a Daughter born, named Christian baptized before Wm. Wallace & Wm Clarke”

I finally had to retire so that I would have time for the genealogy

You have my sympathy!
All the best,
Sarah
P.S. I think the three of us will have to have one of those regional get-togethers up in that area one of these years!

Nice idea Sarah!
Bit chilly for me, how about we meet in France, it's warmer & the wine's cheaper!

Wouldn't get much done though!
Debs, you said it was a couple of days at NRH...the way this list is going it'll be a couple of weeks or months! And I've not given you a couple from my Millars yet!
Do they have wee sleeping bag areas under the laptop spaces at NRH? I'll send you up wee packed lunches...and breakfast...and tea!

I'll put you to work in the vineyards before you get your free wine

A bit too windy today to get any pruning done, so I'm sitting by the wood stove with my feet up and my laptop on my lap chasing ancestors

Rough, this retired life

Sounds fab! You lucky thing you!
When I go to France at the end of May I'll have no family tree chasing for 2 whole weeks....I'm getting the shakes now! I'll have to start weaning myself slowly...5 minutes less each day!

We couldn't survive here without our wireless network

Keeps us from fighting over the internet connection! Traveling in the UK last fall we found a number of places that had wifi and many more do in the US. France is way behind in this respect and it is very unusual to have it in the hotel, and if you do, it is unfortunately not free
By the time May rolls around I will also be experiencing genealogy withdrawal in the middle of the woods in Idaho. I'll try to draw you up a 10 step plan
All the best,
Sarah

Well the gite we are going to does have internet access but I think my husband would try and do away with me if I tried to take the laptop on holiday....might just sneak a few paper records in the bottom of the suitcase!
So you're swapping one lot of trees for another set? The site won't know what's hit it on our return!

The short, gnarled variety for the tall majestic kind, yes. Or, if you prefer, swapping wild boars and rabbits for grizzlies and moose

Heh heh

I'm sure it will be able to handle it
