James Hamilton Jane Waugh
Sorry about the late reply. I thought I would get an e-mail if I had any responses! Anyway, the text is definitely New Office. Thanks to all who had a stab at it.Grendlsmother wrote:Sorry to go off subject - but you don't have a James Hamilton born in Closeburn around 1800 do you? He married Jane Waugh, who I believe may have been a cousin.
James Hamilton was born around 1788 (there are no records) in Morton to James Hamilton and Isabella Strachan and died in 1851 at Cample Bridge. He married Jane Waugh before 1816 and had 5 children. She died in 1827, whereupon he remarried - to Margaret Murdoch of Auchinleck. there was one child.
I was not aware that Jane Waugh may have been a cousin of James Hamilton. Have you any evidence?

James Hamilton and Janet Waugh
This is interesting. I had been unable to find a birth for James Hamilton and had provisionally assigned him to John Hamilton and Margaret Waugh, in which case Janet Waugh could possibly be a cousin.
However, I have now gone back to the OPRs and found a birth for a James Hamilton to Thomas Hamilton and Isabald Kirkpatrick in Closeburn on 27.4.1788, which fits the year you give, but different parents.
The daughter of James Hamilton and Janet Waugh - also Janet, was my ggxgrandmother. (Parents as per death cert). I have no record of her birth, but from censuses put it down as Closeburn, 1728 . If Janet Waugh died in 1827, then this is possibly Janet's correct birth year and her mother probably died in childbirth.
I would be interested to know how you are connected to the family. Janet Hamilton b.1827 married Andrew Connel in March 1853 at Old Cumnock. She died at Benquhat, Dalmellington in 1885. She named her eldest daughter Grace McMurtrie, which has always been a puzzle - does this name mean anything to you? - it does not occur in her husband's family. I am descended from her son, James Hamilton Connel.
I shall be away until Wednesday, but look forward to hearing from you.

I think we have corresponded before about Jannet Hamilton via the Ancestry Message Board.
It is tempting to assume that James was Thomas H and Isabald Kirkpatrick's son. However, in the 1851 Census, Catherine Hamilton is described as his sister. She was definintely the child of James H and Isabella Strachan. The extended family occupied Cample Bridge farm and Isabella died there in 1838.
Jane Waugh died there on 22 June 1827, according to a headstone in Durisdeer cemetery.
I fancy the McMurtrie must come from the Connel side of the family.
James H (1788) was my great grand uncle x3. I have been trying to find his antecedents but without much success.

Thanks for the reply.
Presumably you are descended from a sibling of James H (b.1888). I think I said that he was my gggxgrandfather. With the info you have provided I can research this line a bit further.
Thanks again.
