When I was a young man (now 80 !) our last town crier was a man called Davy Duncan whose usual cry was "The water will be turned off from .... to....." His proper designation was the Town's Officer who swept the streets, lit the gas lamps, cut grass, and generally kept the place tidy. Another of his duties was to head the procession of the newly elected members of the Town Council to church (the Kirking of the Council), wearing a red coat and top hat and carrying a ceremonial halberd (an axe-like weapon with a hook or pick on its back, and a long shaft, used in the 15th and 16th centuries, in the 18th century denoting the rank of sergeant). His grandson David now lives in Tasmania. Excuse the nostalgia :) :)

Wow...well you might call it nostalgia, but I think that is a wonderful historical snippet. Thanks for sharing it with the board, because I am sure many would never have seen such a thing.

I was reminiscing the other day about the milk carts here in Australia, when they used to do the rounds during the night with a clydesdale, and there were one or two times that this rebel youngster used to go out and meet the 'milky' and his horse and help with the rounds for a pint of milk. This was only 30 years ago, and at the end of the horse and cart milk delivery era. I can't imagine my own children doing that these days!!!

Sorry just couldn't resist the temtation

Seriously, you are right, the young ones of today wouldn't understand that there were carts/vans travelling around such as the bakers, butchers, fruit and veg stopping outside homes to sell there wares.
