Hi Ailsa,

The problem with looking for anyone pre-1855 is that the records may simply not exist or the handwriting may lead to many transcription errors. I've had the same experience with several relatives!

I did find Thomas and Jane on the IGI--both their marriage and children Thomas, James, David, Mary, George, and Margaret Drummond all in Bridgeton, Glasgow. So far no luck finding them in the passenger ships lists though.

You mentioned a Jenny and Katie with Jane previously. Who were their parents? Also, do you know approximately when Jane sailed for the US? Was Thomas still alive then?

Hi Carol,
If you're feeling brave enough to take on the Beveridge family , you might like to have a look at these other topics:

I'm about to change continents and can't do much on TS for the next week or so...... All yours!

All the best,

SarahND - whatever do you mean ! don't put Carol off  Look forward to seeing you back on TS soon.

Carol,
Thomas and Jane had David, Thomas, George, Jane and Catherine (Margaret died in 1872 age 4).
Thomas died at sea in 1883 and that same year Jane and daughters Jane and Catherine (later in USA called Jenny and Katy) also sailed to Boston. SarahND must take all credit for tracking them down - i am very grateful to her.
George and Thomas also went together as did David and his new wife.
I was always under the impression that they went to a relative of a Beveridge but as it was Jane who started out first it could have been her relation. Jane Mitchell was her name before marriage.
As i say i am stuck at finding much out about her family for some reason but i will keep plodding on - as we do.
Thanks for the interest.

Hi Ailsa,

I guessed that you probably already had all the census information, but I needed a break from my Clerihews so I have been looking at the passenger lists. Besides SarahND is the champion at the census records! :D

I still haven't found anything in the lists, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. Anyone who thinks the handwriting in the OPR's is a problem should look at the passenger lists. I checked one James Beveridge only to find him listed as a female and wife! :o After enlarging the listing a few times and squinting at it, I decided that the scribbling in the margin was meant to say "Mrs."! The transcriber probably thought it was just an ink blot!

The early passenger lists might not have anymore information than you already have, but I've had good luck with the later ones. I found a great uncle we didn't know existed and a cousin of my great grandfather whom we had never heard of either. He is still on my missing list--or maybe that should be "mystery list"! :D
