I couldn't figure out why my grandmother's brother had the three forenames "Baptist James Holmes". Taking his forenames out of the picture, the rest of his siblings fell comfortably into the Scottish naming pattern (as described by others who have replied to this subject). So why did he get his names?
I was all over the place - looking for Holmes as a surname in previous generations, wondering if they had at that time adhered to the Baptist Church......... then I got a copy of his parents marriage certificate. The officiating Minister was ........... Baptist James Holmes.
Apparently it wasn't unusual for people to name a child after the local Minister, especially if it was the first baptism he had conducted in the parish.

I like it, - I'll quote that example on my courses :!: :D

Was the minister's name actually "Baptist James HOLMES", or was he the Baptist minister "James HOLMES" ? ...........

Hi Anne & Davie,

Couldn't help but look up the name in the IGI ! Is this the minister?

BAPTIST JAMES HOLMES - Christening: 27 FEB 1842 Stockton-On-The-Forest, Yorkshire, England

Parents:
JAMES WALDBY HOLMES
ANN ELIZABETH
------------------------
My mother's middle name is still a mystery - Mary INGRID Armour born 1913.

It's so out of place - other sisters were Bella, Jenny & Peggy, and only one other in her large family had a middle name - youngest brother Archie had Brown (his G-mother's m.s.).

My sister is Ingrid, but she never thought to ask our mother where it came from - and of course it's too late now!

Hi Davie and Jack

Yes his full name was Baptist James Holmes, and yes, I think that probably is him that you have found on the IGI. I googled for him once and came upon a reference to him in, I think, the Yorkshire area.

Regards

Hello again all

Although this is not Scottish naming pattern information.
Whilst I was transcribing the last batch of 1908 Marriages for FREEBMD, I came across these entries:

1908 June Quarter - YATES, Doctor Walsh, Bury.
1908 June Quarter - YATES, Field Marshall S., Blackburn.

Now after reading the possibilities of being named after the sin bosun (meenister) or the local doctor.

The mind boggles at the thought of being named after a Field Marshall
Although the story is probably quite different I hope

Just a PS to my last post - looking at it again I don't think I've been too clear, and if Davie would like to cite this example on his courses it might be worth clarifying that my relatives were originally Scottish and not from Yorkshire.........

The christening found in 1842 YKS is no doubt the CofE minister named BJH who married my great grandparents in 1876 in the parish church in Berwick-on-Tweed. When I put his name in Google I came up with (as far as I can remember) someone of that name who had presented a font to a church in YKS in memory of his father.

My grandmother's brother was B J H Handyside - the Handysides had moved from near Edinburgh to Berwick.

Davie - what courses do you run, and where?

Catriona -

Very interested to see your examples of full names handed on where the name was that of an uncle BY MARRIAGE.

My grandfather was John Sutherland Thompson. We had no idea where the Sutherland came from until I found his father's sister had married a John Sutherland. It still seemed to me that there had to be more to it than that, but perhaps not.......

I must go through this entire (and large) board properly, there is so much useful info on it!
