Hi Leslie

Talk about the long arm of the "Law". Maybe you wouldn't even have been safe going overseas afterall, at least prior to the American Revolution.

I love reading about those Kirk Sessions. It is a shame that they aren't printed in book form.

Hi Sheila
There are two brilliant books which include many quotes and case studies so do give quite a bit of the colour of the Kirk Sessions from around Scotland:
"Girls in Trouble"
&
"Sin in the City"
- both to do with "Sexuality & Social control in Scotland 1660-1780", the first in rural areas, the second in cities. Both are written by Leah Leneman & Rosalind Mitchison and they are a fascinating read!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Leslie

I have got to get a copy of those. "Girls in Trouble" and "Sin in the City".

They sound like movie titles from the sixties or seventies.

I wonder what happened to your runaway couple. Were they sent back to Scotland or were they punished in England?

Hi everyone!

I love the Kirk Sessions. The one I have is pages long where the "Session" dragged on for a couple of years...it's even better when it's your own ancestors :)

I had ordered both those books way back when I originally ordered "The Scottish Family Tree Detective" and reordered from Amazon.UK...they are now on the way to me :D

I just came across these Kirk Sessions for South Leith that you might be interested in. http://scotsfind.org/south_leith/leith.pdf ...happy reading :!:

Hi Sheila

Don't know yet if they are likely to be mentioned again with some indication of the outcome, or whether that will be all - still working my way through the years!!
What did occur to me is that William Allan & Helen Oswald appeared to be still together twelve years after they had run away, so at least they appear to have been capable of holding a relationship together despite all the odds being against them!
Anne - I'd forgotten about those South Leith records on line (I have the same thing on a CD) - they make interesting reading too. Full of all sorts of misdemeanours! Cheaper than the two books too. Thanks for the reminder on that one.

I'd agree - (the above couple are nothing to do with me!! Though what I think is possibly one of my lot was called as a witness to him having been round her house frequently! ) I have a few who were elders over the years in various parishes and one irregular marriage brought before the session, but nothing too spectacular...yet! I live in hope.

Best wishes
