Bookless/Buglass, Berwickshire

Post by Rach » Tue Sep 04, 2007 5:35 pm

It is some time since I had a query but now I have several :!:
While I was updating my information I discovered that I had only approximate dates for my gr, gr grandparents and their children - taken from the 1851 and 1871 Census'.
I can find no marriage banns for Thomas Bookless/Buglass c1823, Gladsmuir, East Lothian and Catherine Forrester/Foster 1818, Ayton, Berwick.
Also, there seem to be no record of births for their children:
Ayton, Berwick
Margaret c1843; Alexander c1845; Thomas c1846; William c1848;
Edrom, Berwick
Catherine c1850; Agnes c1851
Ladykirk
George c1854
I have tried wild cards in weird and wonderful combinations but can't find them. [sigh]
Can someone please help :?:

Hi Rach:

There are many Thomas Bookless/Buglass listings in the IGI, including some from the right area, but not the right years - have you had a look there?

Is this your Catherine -

Thanks for having a look, Frances.Yes, that's my gr gr grandmother. That was the only one I had already found, sorry
I have just been trying S.P. again for the birth of her husband, Thomas, but using soundex on his surname just brought up names that were nothing like Buglass or Bookless. His father's name on the death cert was Alexander, mother was Margaret Harrison but these may be wrong.
The children's births are a mystery too. Catherine born c1850, Edrom is the one I am most interested in finding.

Hi Rae
Any indication that they were not Established Church of Scotland? e.g. with later marriages (post 1854) in the same family; does it say "after banns according to the Established Church of Scotland" or does it say something else? Perhaps might explain their not being in the OPRs.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
I had wondered that myself. It does say 'after banns .....Established C of S' on younger Catherine's marriage in 1875 but perhaps her parents weren't part of that for a while.

I think I may be able to work out now where Thomas and Catherine were married. At long last I have tracked them down in the 1841 census for Mordington and both are working in different places at Lamberton!!! My problem was partly because Thomas was only 15, born in the parish and I had been looking for someone a bit older, born in East Lothian. Catherine's surname is Forster which I suppose is the way Forrester might have sounded like in the Berwickshire dialect [ I should know having been brought up there!].
Now, hopefully, all I need now is to look at the Lamberton Toll records. Keeping my fingers crossed.
There are still the missing children though................ :-k
It has taken me years to reach this point as it was one of those cases of leave it alone for a time and go back to it.
Keeping my fingers crossed.
