Rankin family

Post by Lizzie » Wed Sep 26, 2007 1:34 pm

I turned to this Rankin family some months ago as a diversion from the Macrae's and once again I got stuck with missing births from both IGI and SP. Here is the picture.

A marriage certificate has John Rankin m Elizabeth McDade in 1871 Blythwood Glasgow. John is 23 Elizabeth is 22 both lived 511 Piccadilly St. Parents of Groom Robert Rankin and Jane Rankin m.s. McDade. Parent of Bride James McDade and Mary McDade m.s. Kennedy. Married in the Free Church of Scotland.
I can find no birth of John with these parents. Also, no record of a Robert Rankin fitting the bill. I also cannot find the birth record of John Rankin. I did find the death of Elizabeth in 1883 age 32 at 206
Castlebank? St. The 1881 census comes up with only one match at 67 Burnside St. with four children. I can find no of John after this nor his death which I searched from1883 - to date.

Looking back I can see why I gave up searching for these Rankin's all those years ago. Perhaps fresh eyes may see something I missed?

Hi Lizzie
Married in the Free Church of Scotland.
So you are not likely to find any birth or marriage between 1843-1855 in the OPRs (Established Church of Scotland) as they were Free Church attenders - there may be records in NAS.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lizzie,
Could this be the family in 1851? If so, perhaps John's mother died soon after his birth. At least the father's name is Robert

14 Mcghil St, Hamilton, Lanark
Robert Rankine, 43, Head, born Hamilton, Lanark, Carter
Gavin Rankine, 16, Son, born Hamilton, Lanark, Scholar
Elizabeth Rankine, 14, Daughter, born Hamilton, Lanark, Scholar
Robert Rankine, 12, Son, born Hamilton, Lanark, Scholar
George Rankine, 9, Son, born Hamilton, Lanark, Scholar
William Rankine, 5, Son, born Hamilton, Lanark, Scholar
John Rankine, 3, Son, born Hamilton, Lanark
William Brown, 22, Visitor, born Lanark, Lanark, Carter
William Calderhead, 43, Servant, born Wishaw, Lanark, Carter
John Steil, 17, Visitor, born Hamilton, Lanark, Carter

What is the occupation given for Robert in John's marriage cert?

Hmm, I note that in the 1881 record you mention he says born in Glasgow...and he is a slater (journeyman)

Could this be him in 1871 just before his marriage?

1871
411 Parliamentary Rd, Glasgow St David, Lanark
Jane Ball, 57, Head, born Ireland
Sarah Ball, 17, Daur, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Silk Darner
John Rankin, 19, Lodger, born Lanark, Slater
John Magrath, 21, Lodger, born England, Compositor
Thomas Mc Defries, 25, Lodger, born Stirling, Drapery Shopman
Andrew Reid, 30, Lodger, born Aberdeen, Carrier House Clerk

Trying to get a handle on where he was actually born...

All the best,
Sarah

Thank you so much for your time Sarah, I did not recognize any of these names you found but as mentioned earlier I think my best chance is finding John's death in Glasgow. Not having much luck yet, but never say never eh! His death must turn up somewhere. Once again thank you.
