Why Can't I Find ?

Post by trish58 » Mon Oct 01, 2007 12:31 pm

Hello everyone

Help needed please

I am trying to find the births of 14 children born to John McKeachie & Janet Dougan. Dugan, Duggan, Dougon, all spellings.

They married 1808 Old Luce found the marriage on the OPR's, also found their 1st child William 1809 Old Luce, this is the only child I can find on the OPR's, I know they where still in the area when they had a child born 1826 in Knocknain Andrew Agnew 1 March 1826, later Captain, though I can't find his birth either on the OPR's (info given by family)

I have seached every IGI index for Wigtownshire from A-W, no records.

Also not able to find birth of Thomas McKeachie around 1720, he married 1745 to Martha McMeehine, found their marriage. On the IGI record it says "parents not available", so where do I go from here. Without at least one parent name my tree stops here.
Again I have exhausted all avenues.

Any of you great people have any clues I can follow ?

Thanks heaps
Tricia

Hi Trish

Wigtownshire was a hotbed of non conformism. Could they have changed denomination?

Have you found any later marriage certificates which give details of which church they belonged to?

Hello Anne

No there is nothing more available on the family at all, have really come to a halt with this one.

Guess I may have to leave this one, without names there is no research.

Thanks
Tricia

Hi Tricia,

The 1841 census on Ancestry offers James MacGeach (age 30) and family at Dilnagap, New Luce; and Andrew MacGeoch (age 40) at Glenwhillie, New Luce.

Do either of these people or locations fit into your research?

The 1851 has a number of McGeoch, McGeoach and McKeachie people in Wigtownshire.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi

On SP there is a will of a John McKeachie farmer at Knocknain in 1841. He could easily be your man and the will may give you some clues that you do not already have.

Hi Anne & Andrew

Thank you so much for this information, I need to cross check several of the names, but yes a lot of them APPEAR to be mine.
.
1851 Census
Andrew A Mckeackie 25 Seaman. Captain Andrew Agnew Mckeackie
who captained the "Martin Luther" to Australia in 1854, and also the "Progress" 1856.
He settled in Australia died 1883.

It is through this knowledge I know he was one of 14 children, no other names where given to me, and I can only find William the first born on OPRs.

Will follow this information through, thanks again for now. 8)

Why Can't I Find ?

Hello Andrew & Anne

Have now had time to go over the information you found for me.

Pretty sure the 1841 family of McKachie is mine, Janet was nee Dougan, there is Alexander Dougan on this census, could be family member as her Father was named Thomas.

The 1851 most certainly fits in. Janets husband John died in 1838, hence him not appearing on either census.

Janet went to Australia and died there (here) 1867.

The "Will" I downloaded for John 1841 appears to be William the eldest Son claiming all, states John had died in 1838.

I found it odd that no other member of the family was mentioned not even John's wife Janet,.

Thanks again for solving another problem, though I still haven't found all the children, I am sure I will along the track.

Tricia
