James Thorburn and Ann London..I have been unable to find this marriage in "ScotlandsPeople" OPR's... All I have to go on is the birth of a son..William Thorburn, Born 1818, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh..Parents..James Thorburn and Ann London...
Any suggestion as to where I could search..

Hi Al
Welcome to TalkingScot! Have you tried to search for the death record of James, Ann or William? Perhaps those records would hold some clues?
Good Luck

Hi Al,
I am wondering if James Thorburn married Ann London or not. There was a marriage of a James Wells and an Ann London dated 15-May-1820 at St Cuthberts Parish, Edinburgh. As "London" is not a common surname in this area, I would be surprised if this is not the same lady. Assuming that William, son of James Thorburn and Ann London (born in 1818 in St Cuthberts Parish, Edinburgh) survived until at least 1855, then as Marilyn says, the key is his death certificate. If Ann London is one and the same, his death could be registered as William Wells, William Thorburn, or William London (or indexed as one, two or all three, depending on the details provided at the time).
It may be worth your while viewing the microfilm of the St Cuthberts OPRs to see William's birth / christening entry. The critical words to look for are "born lawfully" or "born naturally". In modern terms - born to married parents, or to unmarried parents.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson
