Where is Newbigging? .....

Post by Marie Svedahl » Fri Jun 17, 2005 5:42 am

This week I found my George Fowler's death on the OPR for Inveresk Midlothian:
- "George Fowler, gardner in Newbiggin, died 10th April 1810, and buried on the 13th in his own ground." I take that as meaning he had his own cemetery plot?

He left a wife and seven children ranging in age from 21 to one year. And then his widow /relex died in May 1816. I've wondered how the family survived after their parent's death.

But my question concerns the place where George worked - Newbiggin or Newbigging as it was variously spelled in the church records. What or where was Newbiggin? Would George have been working for someone else or possibly self-employed? Any suggestions for a website (or book) that might tell more about the occupation of "gardener?"

Thanks,

Marie

Hi Marie,

Newbigging is a street in Musselburgh, the main town in Inveresk Parish. It leads southwards from the High Street towards Inveresk Village.

It can be found on the current map at www.streetmap.co.uk by searching for Newbigging, and clicking on the "street" marker. The street name has been used since at least the mid 19th century, and probably earlier than that. The equivalent map on www.old-maps.co.uk shows Newbigging as an area by that road.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
