Hi John

Sadly it doesn't look good. Wee David is right there with the family on the 1851 census and it states that he and his brother William were both born in Dreghorn. The problem being is that it appears Dreghorn has some incomplete OPRs. I'm guessing that either they were not recorded at all or the pages are missing.

My Bloxham's reference describes the Dreghorn records as Deaths: no entries, Marriages: proclamations only, and Births: on the page after May 1771 there are nine entiries on one family 1754-80.

This can't mean that is all the birth entries made after 1771...I mean an OPR search on SP does turn up some DICK births in your time frame in Dreghorn...just that it doesn't turn up your family.

Here's the 1851 census as recorded by ancestry.com

Name: David Dick
Age: 4
Estimated birth year: abt 1847
Relationship: Son
Father's name: James
Mother's name: Margaret

Page: 14 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 35
Line: 16
Roll: CSSCT1851_131
Household Members: Name Age
David Dick 4
Elizabeth Dick 14
James Dick 47
James Dick 14
Margaret Dick 45

Hi Jean

Many thanks for your efforts.
As we used to say in Scotland...."It all comes out in the washing".

I know Elisabeth emigrated to the USA but at present I don't know if they went out as a couple, or alone.
From a family of 12 seven of them emigrated to the USA.

Best regards

John

Hi John

Elisabeth as in the daughter Elisabeth? Do you have any idea about when she left Scotland...or where she was heading to in the US? The later the better for immigration information and also for maybe finding a marriage for her before she yet left after 1855. Do you know anything about her death?

I'll nosey around but any further clues could be extremely beneficial in finding her.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi folks

You got it Annette! :D It's a wee bit tricky to find on SP though.....seems they have indexed it under Andrew and not Edward but the record quite clearly reads Edward with a father named Andrew. Hmmmmm....

1859 MILLER ANDREW DICK ELIZABETH DREGHORN /AYR 589/00 0011

Guess it's another one for the correction heap

I've not had a moment to peruse the immigration records but now with a full family to run with it should make things simpler. Unfortunately work is calling at the moment :(

Best wishes

Well there is a possible arrival in New York....

Arrival date: 16 Jun 1870
Port of Departure: Glasgow, Scotland and Moville, Ireland
Ethnicity: Scottish (Scotish)
Vessel: Australia

The manifest shows:

Elizth Miller age 33 no occupation
William " age 4
Margt " age 2
David " there are several marks in the month column but difficult to determine. The index shows him as born 1870.

So now it looks like you need to search for deaths of Andrew and James in Dreghorn to make this scenario fit. I'm off to search for Edward to see if he might have preceeded his family to the US.

Best wishes

Ok...not finding Edward's immigration but wee James died in 1869 and his uncle was the informant but Edward was still alive. Sooooo....because the 1870 arrival messes with the US census for that year I jumped to 1880 and crossed my fingers.....

Name: Edward Miller
Home in 1880: Lackawanna, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania
Age: 41
Estimated birth year: abt 1839
Birthplace: Scotland
Relation to head-of-household: Self (Head)
Spouse's name: Elizabeth
Father's birthplace: Scotland
Mother's birthplace: Scotland
Occupation: Engineer
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male

Household Members:
Edward Miller 41
Elizabeth Miller 43
William Miller 16
Margaret Miller 13
David Miller 11
Annie Miller 8
Jennie Miller 5

It sure looks like that might be your Elizabeth reunited with Edward...and adding a couple more weans since landing!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean and Annette

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you as I see you have both been beavering away on my behalf. Marvellous response.

However, I did not make my initial reply clear.
When I said 7 from a family of 12 emigrated I meant the siblings of Elisabeth. (the ither weans)

I checked through some notes I had sent to me from America and see that Elisabeth Dick apparently was buried in Pittsburg, KN. I don't know where that is but one of her brother's, Thomas Reid Ferguson, died in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Following Jean's info on the 1851 census I have checked Dick deaths after 1855 in Dreghorn. None of them fit with ages on the census, so if they didn't arrive in the USA then they may have died prior to 1855. This is more likely than dying on board the ship.

I'm afraid I sent both of you down the wrong track, but at least I learnt a bit more. So, in return, and considering it's already December, I'd like to wish you both a safe and enjoyable Christmas break.

Yours as aye

John

Hi John,

Pittsburg, Kansas is in SE Kansas not too far from the state line and Joplin, Missouri. This was a huge coal mining area with both deep mines and surface mines and is the location of one of the largest electric steam shovels called Big Brutus. Now it is an agricultural area. You can google Pittsburg, Kansas and you'll find several sites with information on the area. There are quite a few Fergusons there.
