Can anyone help correct, confirm or add to my findings?

John Dobie married Marion Robeson or Barbara Inglis and they had the following child:
George Dobie born 1766-1769 who married Sarah Nicol born abt 1770 and they had the following children:

Marion born 29 March 1795 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Barbara born 7 October 1798 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Jean born 7 December 1800 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Sarah born 24 April 1803 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
William born 24 April 1803 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland

You don't mention the source of your information, so you may have checked this already:

Looking on IGI, extract-

A JOHN DOBIE married a MARRION ROBERTSON
Marriage: 05 DEC 1760 Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland

Could that be siginificant? Not seeing a Robeson, but might be a mistranscripion. You'd need to check the original record. Not sure why you've mentioned two wives - did he marry twice? Or is it that there is some uncertainty? There are quite few Dobies in the area by the looks of things, so I think you'd need to be careful to make sure you have the correct one: the above wives could belong to two different Johns!

There is this entry, but it is a submission:

...so again a check on the original would be worth following up.

The IGI shows these children (extracts) as belonging to George Dobie & Sarah Nicol with dates of christenings given:

Not seeing William so far, but I'm not too worried about that - it could well be that he is not on IGI. Again it would be worth checking the OPR - dates of birth and christenings may be given. South Leith records are generally very ordered and neat, well kept and easy to read.

South Leith is one of the many parishes that the boys don't appear on the online version of the IGI for. William is there on ScotlandsPeople.

Since Andrew has already found William for you on SP this is a bit repetitive....but another resource that often helps when the online IGI omits male records is the British Isles Vital Records Index. This CD rom library is not available to use online and does not contain actual digital images like SP but it is another helpful resource at times like this.

The entry for your William is found as:

DOBIE, William Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 24 Apr 1803
Christening Date: 15 May 1803 Recorded in: South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Father: George DOBIE
Mother: Sarah NICOL
Source: FHL Film 1067778 Dates: 1791 - 1835

Thank you so much for your reply and for confirming my information, also for your information and advice.

Lesley you have helped confirm I had the right children to George Dobie and Sarah Nichol. It was a good feeling removing question marks next to these entries. To feel confident in viewing the book entry in the OPR knowing I would not waste money getting it wrong.

I use Scotlandspeople OPR Births and Baptisms, ScotsFind and IGI Records for my source. I now only use SP OPR when I am pretty certain I am on the right trail, yes I learnt the hard way.

The reason I have two wives for John Dobie is because I do not know who are the correct parents for my George Dobie who is married to Sarah Nicol. I was wondering if anyone knew which is correct:

George Dobie born 1766 in Gladsmuir whose parents are called John Dobie and Marion Robertson. Or, George Dobie born 1869 in Dalkeith whose parents are called John Dobie and Barbara Inglis.

George Dobie names his first daughter Marion, so I am inclined to assume John and Marion Dobie are his parents. But - he names his second daughter Barbara that makes me feel a little uncertain.

Hopefully my next lot of research will answer this.

Many thanks for your help with William Dobie. Thank you for letting me know of the British Isles Vital Records index, it sounds a very useful source.

The OPR for William Dobie does not mention a middle name. The middle name from the British Isles Vital Records you have mentions his middle name as Christening but I have had his middle name as Cleghorn and have been trying to research this.

I need to do more research to find the correct parents to George Dobie and Sarah Nicol. I have John Dobie and Marion Robertson or John Dobie and Barbara Inglis as possible parents for George Dobie 1766-1769 – I have Thomas Nicol as father to Sarah Nicol but no mother as yet.

George Dobie names his first daughter Marion, so I am inclined to assume John and Marion Dobie are his parents.

If they followed the Scottish naming pattern, as many families did, the first daughter would be named after the wife's mother, and the second daughter after the husband's mother, so if we were going by that, George's mother is more likely to be Barbara, with the third daughter named, as expected here , after her own mother, Sarah. The Scottish naming pattern is not always 100% reliable, but often a good guide!
