There are plenty of James christened in Polmont at the right time, but none of them Rankine or Dunn. What were the names of the parents given on the death cert before it was amended?
Mary Dun appears to have been born in Polmont, anyway:
MARY DUN
Christening: 16 MAR 1794 Polmont, Stirling
Father: PETER DUN
Mother: MARY MCAGIE
All the best,
Sarah

More grist for the mill. 3 year old John Rankine appears in the 41 census living in Polmont with the John Marshall/Mary Dun family. John and Mary are my gggparents, but I do not know what connection they had to young John.Perhaps John and Agnes Marshall were siblings. I know John had a sister Ann Bennie Marshall. Its too bad the 41 census doesn't give relationships.

HI Thanks to everyone for their comments, on James Rankines death cert his son lists James parents as William and Margaret, and I could not find a James Rankine born 1816, then the amendment by his wife Agnes Marshall states that the parents were Mary Dunn and John Rankine, I noticed it was Mary Dunn and not Mary Rankine nee Dunn so Im thinking they were never married. I have on the 1841 census James aged 25 and what looks like Ann or Agn and their son Alex aged 1 in Muiravonside, their oldest son was called John ,but he is not on that census could he have been the John living with your ggg grandparents.David

If the kirk session records for Polmont exist (I tried to check but the search function at the National Archives of Scotland is not working at the moment) you might find mention of the illegitimate birth when the session records come online. Or, when someone you know is taking a trip to Edinburgh!iluvu2 wrote: I noticed it was Mary Dunn and not Mary Rankine nee Dunn so Im thinking they were never married.
This sounds like a possible scenario indeed!iluvu2 wrote: I have on the 1841 census James aged 25 and what looks like Ann or Agn and their son Alex aged 1 in Muiravonside, their oldest son was called John ,but he is not on that census could he have been the John living with your ggg grandparents.David

im still in shock I REALLY AM ,i have been at this for around 2 years and within a few days ,this forum has helped me with two brick walls, and Iv been telling everyone who will listen my news, sooo happy, if I could only find James Rankines birth in Polmont 1816 parents are John Rankine and Mary Dunn now that would be the cherry on the cake yumyum, but I do feel he is connected to John Marshall and Mary Dunn as James,s wifes maiden name was Marshall. Am I making sense?
