Help needed again!!!!!

I am still researching the mcgilvry side of my family and have managed to get back to 1794 to a james gilvarey who was born at that time in aberdeen, i know when he was married in 1822 to margaret ross at maryculter church and forward to his children etc but i want to go back to his birth and get parents names but have hit a brick wall again.

Can anyone help please!

Hi Gillian,

Most of my families were good at keeping to the tradition of the Scottish naming pattern and I was able to find some parents that way. Did you try searching going by the children's names?

1st son after father's father
2nd son after mother's father
3rd son after the father
1st daughter after mother's mother
2nd daughter after father's mother
3rd daughter after the mother.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Gillian,

I've loads of MacGillivrays in my tree, and have received quite a bit of help from two people specialising in the family. The first is Jane McGillivray, who runs the Operation Dunlichity website at http://membres.lycos.fr/ancestor/dunlichity/ (mainly Invernesshire and Nairnshire) and then the guru himself, Roy McGilvray, who has transcribed every MacGillivray entry in all of the Scottish OPRs still in existence - his site is at http://web.ncf.ca/cv297/mcg-clan.html .

Both of them are absolute gems, and extremely helpful with regard to MacGillivray enquiries.

Chris :)
