Please can anyone help me with the parents and siblings of George Dobie born 1766-1769 in Midlothian, Scotland?. He married a Sarah (Sally) Nicol in Cannongate, Edinburgh, Scotland 20 November 1791.

IGI seems to be down just now, so not able to check, but are there any likely births for George there?

Does the OPR entry give any clues at all? (Yeah, I know it's a long shot, but you never know...just sometimes there is a wee something.. a placename, a cautioner.... )

It couldn't have been EAST Lothian, rather than Midlothian, could it? According to BVRBI there were no George Dobies born in Midlothian anywhere near those years, but this one in East Lothian might be your chap...

This record on IGI is only a submitted one, so the birthplace for George could be based on an assumption made by the submitter, rather than on actual facts..

However, there is another George Dobie on IGI, but this also is a submitted record...

Since neither of these appear on the BVRBI records, I'd be inclined to be wary of taking them at face value.

In the OPR there are two possible parents to George Dobie. There is George Dobie born 13 July 1766 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian whose parents are John Dobie and Marion Robertson. The other George Dobie is born 15 October 1769 in Dalkeith, Midlothian his parents are John Dobie and Barbara Inglis.

Before doing the above OPR research I asked about the Scottish naming patterns on talkingscots. From the information I received I presume John Dobie and Barbara Inglis would be his parents, because George Dobie named his first daughter Marion his second daughter Barbara. I was also told to go cautiously because some families did not stick to the naming pattern. This then leaves it open to the possibility of his parents being either John Dobie and Barbara Inglis or John Dobie and Marion Robertson.

IGI has a marriage entry for a George Dobie to Sarah Nicol and a birth entry for a George Dobie born 1769 Dalkeith whose parents are John Dobie and Barbara Inglis.

I think you can see I do my research but I am stuck.

Unfortunately, there is another regular occurance many of us have been caught out with at some time.

If the two John Dobies were the sons of two brothers, both might well have named one of their own sons George, after an ancestor.

I have two families like this in my line who were so inconsiderate they had their children in exactly the same order and named them identically! It took me months to finally sort them out.

The parents and sister to George Dobie you have given me from the BVRI seems to fit with the names my George Dobie has given his children.

The George Dobie I have marries Sarah Nicol and their children are:

First Daughter: Marion born 1795 South Leith
Second Daughter: Barbara born 1798 South Leith
Third Daughter: Jean born 1800 South Leith
Fouth Daughter: Sarah born 1803 South Leith
First Son: William born 1803 outh Leith
Second Son: George born 1805 South Leith
